Traditional Mexican Antiques Auction

Octagonal Base. China, Early 20th century, Carved, inked ivory.

The La Viga road in Iztacalco runs from the center to the south side of Mexico City. The concrete road was built in place of the historic Canal de la Viga, a waterway once used for food supply, recreation, and navigation. In the early 20th century, the canal was ordered closed, and the present infrastructure was built on it. An anonymous 18th-century painting of the old canal is available in the upcoming auction of traditional Mexican antiques and Asian art, offered by Morton Subastas. It comes with a carved gilt wooden frame.

A Coromandel lacquer folding screen from the late 18th century is also available. It features 12 double-view panels in lacquered and enameled wood with chinoiserie decoration. The chinoiserie style was created in Europe to interpret and imitate Chinese and East Asian artistic traditions. The event offers over 200 lots. Photographs

Richard Prince (1949) - Untitled (Cowboy), 1980-1984

Richard Prince is an American photographer and Pop artist known for his rephotographed pictures. During the mid-1970s, Prince started working at Time Life. He sent article tear sheets from magazines to companies notifying them of their published advertisements. While working at the Time Life library, Prince started rephotographing these ads and presenting them as art. The upcoming Photographs auction, offered by Finarte, presents photographs from the Cowboys series by Prince. This series involved rephotography of a Marlboro ad campaign. Explaining his idea for the works, Prince states, “At Time Life, I was working with seven or eight magazines, and Marlboro had ads in almost all of them. Every week, I’d see one and be like, ‘Oh, that’s mine. Thank you.’ It’s sort of like beachcombing.” Through his Cowboys series, Prince comments on American masculinity and its representation in the media.

Another highlight is an archival pigment print titled Girls in the Windows by award-winning photographer Ormond Gigli. This photograph features 43 formally-dressed women standing in brownstone windows. The available image creates contrasting imagery with old New York architecture and modern, colorful dresses. Also showcased is the celebrated photo portrait titled Afghan Girl by photojournalist Steve McCurry for National Geographic. Rounding out the offerings are photographs by Helmut Newton, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Cindy Sherman, and Gabriele Basilico. American and European Art

Nellie Augusta Knopf (American, 1875-1962) Garden Flowers, September Bouquet, 1926

Nature is often dramatized in Marvin Cone’s paintings, providing a testament to his belief that art should comment on life. Cone was a graduate of the Art Institute of Chicago but spent most of his career in rural Iowa, the landscape that inspired his artistic style. He was also friends with Grant Wood, another prominent Iowan artist known for such works as American Gothic. A piece from Wood is featured alongside Cone’s Cloud Painting (circa 1934) in the upcoming American and European Art sale. Auctioned by Hindman, Cone’s work reveals layers of colors that create towering cumulus clouds, hills below, and two birds soaring together in the sky.

Lady by a Window (1918) is from another American artist, Louis Ritman, known for his Impressionist depictions of nude women. The sale of the oil painting will benefit the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago. Works from European artists are also featured in the event, including Pablo Picasso’s 1920 gouache on paper piece and Gaston Lachaise’s sculptures of powerful, full-figured women. The latter artist often stated that his inspiration was his wife and muse, Isabel Dutaud Nagle. Other finds include a painting titled Two Magenta Waterlilies by Joseph Stella. Autumn Americana Auction

Henry Farny - Native American Hunter

During the golden era of American carousels, many skilled artisans migrated from Europe to the United States. Among them was Charles Carmel. In 1883, he moved to New York from Russia and started working at Looff, a carousel manufacturing company. His carousels often involved highly decorated, realistic horses. The upcoming New Haven Auctions sale presents an early 20th-century outside row stander carousel horse by Carmel. The available horse has a windswept mane, detailed blankets, and jewel adorned bridles. Valued for their distinct designs, Carmel horses were carved to appear strong and powerful.

Another highlight of the auction is a watercolor painting titled Native American Hunter by Henry Farny. Before developing an interest in Western art, Farny worked as an illustrator for children’s books. During a trip to Missouri, the artist made many drawings and sketches of life in the American West. In 1890, Farny gave up illustration and started painting scenes of his travels. The available picture was acquired directly from the artist’s family. The auction also showcases varieties of redware pitchers, including one attributed to John Betts Gregory. A selection of Navajo rugs, Chippendale and Southern Federal furniture, and American pottery articles complete the listings. Artelisted to Offer Antique Photos in Upcoming Sale

Antique Real Photo Stereoview American Civil War

Stereoviews were antique photos that also served as an early iteration of 3D media. Popular in America between the 1860s and 1920s, stereoviews used two almost identical photos, taken a few inches from each other. When viewed through a lens, the photos would create the illusion of three dimensions. This October, Artelisted will bring 150 examples of these photos to auction in its Stereoviews Americana sale.

One of the main appeals of stereoviews in the late 19th and early 20th centuries was allowing Americans to feel like they were present for major events. A featured lot in this auction, for example, is a stereoview of President Woodrow Wilson addressing Congress. For contemporary viewers, these antique photos also serve as historical documents, including stereoviews taken during the American Civil War. Several highlighted lots show the wounded and dead after Civil War battles. Others, meanwhile, remind viewers of the less documented, quieter moments between skirmishes.

Photos of the railroad were popular for stereoviews because Americans were fascinated with this new, fast mode of transportation. Available in this auction is a photo of soldiers sent off for the Spanish American War on a train, their loved ones gathered near each window.

As time went on, it became possible for many people to create stereoviews. This allowed for more local, slice-of-life moments to be captured. One antique photo coming to auction shows three workers shipping pineapples in Florida. Each man has his place in the assembly line to wrap, store, and then box up the fruit. Another photo depicts a man kissing a woman on the cheek. Little does he know that another man, who perhaps also has feelings for the woman, is about to hit him on the behind. Select Antique Jewelry & Watches

American designer and jeweler David Webb is best known for his sculptural animal motifs and his use of textured gold, colored gemstones, and carved rock. In his early career, Webb made weekly visits to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where he was inspired by the goldwork of the ancient world. He eventually created his own mixture of alloys, using them in his jewelry and objets d’art. As Webb said, “I believe the things I make have museum quality and, hopefully, will last as long as the originals that inspired them.” The upcoming sale, presented by SAJ Auction, highlights a pair of nephrite, coral, enamel, diamond, and gold objets d’art by Webb.

Another highlight of the auction is a gold and diamond Tubogas cuff watch from Bulgari. Introduced in the 1940s, the Tubogas design was inspired by the distinct shape of gas carrier pipes. The motif was revived by Bulgari in the 1970s, becoming one of the firm’s trademarks. A Tiffany & Co. bangle bracelet by Jean Schlumberger is also available. The white enamel bracelet has a gold band and collet-set diamonds. View the entire catalog for this event at Bidsquare.
