French Bisque Dolls Stand Out in the Forthcoming Pook & Pook Sale

French Bru JNE bebe bisque head doll

Porcelain dolls began emerging in France during the 1850s. While they first appeared as popular children’s toys, vintage bisque dolls would later become revered collectibles. 19th-century dollmakers initially struggled to incorporate more life-like features. It was only after the discovery of Chinese porcelain that the artisans were able to create detailed painted faces, human-like features, and realistic clothing. In the second session of the upcoming Online Only Decorative Arts auction, a selection of French bisque dolls will be offered by Pook & Pook, Inc. Among these, French Bru JNE Bebe bisque dolls and a Jumeau fashion doll will be available for bidding.

A tin advertising sign for Sen-Sen chewing gum will be presented in the sale. The available Sen-Sen sign shows a city street scene with two men holding packets of the gum. It reads “5 Cents – Grown up little Boys like it.” A DC Comics Superman comic book rack that was once a store display is another standout lot in this online auction. The rack stands 62 inches tall and still has the original placard inscribed “for the best in comics reading—the line of stars.” View all 693 lots, including advertising signs, lithograph trays, furniture, collectibles, and pop culture, on Bidsquare.

Paintings from the Hairy Who lead Hindman’s Post War and Contemporary Art Sale

Jim Nutt (American, b. 1938) Shouldn't We Be More Carefull, 1977

Hindman’s upcoming Post War and Contemporary Art auction will feature a 1977 acrylic painting by Jim Nutt, a Chicago Imagist and founding member of the Hairy Who art group. Six art school graduates gathered in Chicago to form the group in the mid-1960s, combining forces to snag gallery space in a competitive market. Their work is often contrasted with the slick Pop Art flowing from New York. The style of the Hairy Who was more frequently described as “sweaty, nervous, sometimes giggly or goofy,” according to Hyperallergic. The available Nutt painting is titled Shouldn’t We Be More Carefull? [sic]. It depicts a maternal figure tending to the outstretched hand of a young boy. The viewer can gather more context for the scene from the purple words surrounding the figures: “… small potatoes or/ and Big Thumbs.”

The sale also includes works from other founding members of the Hairy Who. From Gladys Nilsson, the wife of Jim Nutt, is a Plexiglass painting made a few years before the Hairy Who group officially formed. Chicago Imagist collectors will find pieces from Karl Wirsum and Suellen Rocca as well. Visit Bidsquare to view the full catalog and register to bid in the Post War and Contemporary Art auction.

Hockney, Basquiat, and Still Headline Contemporary Art Evening Sale

David Hockney Nichols Canyon

David Hockney’s Nichols Canyon is among the highlights of Phillips‘ upcoming 20th Century & Contemporary Art Evening Sale. The painting illustrates Hockney’s daily drive from his home atop Nichols Canyon in the Hollywood Hills down to his studio. “I look down on Hollywood,” says Hockney about the commute with a smile, aware of the double meaning.

Abstract Expressionist Clyfford Still is also represented in this auction with a piece from his later career, PH-407. After spending 15 years in New York at the urging of Jackson Pollock and others, Still looked for a simpler life in Maryland. Paintings from this period, including PH-407, are noted for their heightened focus on two-dimensional figures.

Jean-Michel Basquiat collectors will find the artist’s Portrait of A-One A.K.A. King offered in this sale. Produced in 1982, the year Basquiat joined the New York art scene, this portrait shows the artist incorporating his street art background into his early canvases. The work pays tribute to A-One, Basquiat’s friend and fellow street artist. Numerous graffiti tags surround A-One in this piece. Although these details may look impromptu, several layers of revisions on the canvas indicate Basquiat carefully chose and edited each tag. Those interested in this or any other piece can register to bid on Phillips’ website. Meanwhile, those interested in other upcoming contemporary art sales can browse more of Auction Daily’s previews.

Pook & Pook With Noel Barrett Will Offer Vintage Toys for the Festive Season

Baranger Studios animated lovebird window display

Noel Barrett and Pook & Pook are no strangers to toys, and their expertise in vintage toys is unmatched. This December, they are bringing toys from Baranger Studios, J. & E. Roullet and Decamps was a 19th and 20th-century French toy company. The upcoming Christmas sale features several of their toys, including a tiger on a ball that rotates clockwise. The inscribed instructions read, “To operate, place a coin in the hand of the Pitcher, and press the Lever.” View and bid for all the lots exclusively on Bidsquare.

Maya Death Gods and Dinosaur Eggs Highlight Fine Antiquities, Ethnographic & Fine Art Sale

Therizinosaurus Egg Clutch, 70 to 120 Million Years Old

A complete clutch of Therizinosaurus eggs highlights Artemis Gallery‘s upcoming Fine Antiquities, Ethnographic & Fine Art sale. The Therizinosaurus is known for its scythe-like claws; its name, in fact, means “Scythe Lizard.” Because it is unlikely that a predator could steal an entire clutch of eggs, the auction house believes that a mother Therizinosaurus lost them as the result of a natural disaster.

Among the pre-Columbian pieces on offer is a Maya drinking vessel decorated with a depiction of God “A.” One of the gods of death, God “A” is seen here with rotting flesh and wearing an extra eyeball atop his head. The vessel might have been used for drinking cocoa, which was particularly common among the wealthy.

Viking enthusiasts will find a silver and amber brooch from the Norse seafarers. The piece is decorated with intertwining animals in the Jellinge style, popular among Vikings around 900 CE. Those interested can register to bid in the Fine Antiquities, Ethnographic & Fine Art sale on LiveAuctioneers.
