Marc Chagall Lithograph Leads Clarke Auction Gallery’s Upcoming Auction

MARC CHAGALL (RUSSIAN-FRENCH, 1887-1985).

A Marc Chagall lithograph will be available in Clarke Auction Gallery’s upcoming Fine Art, Jewelry, Antiques, Asian, & Midcentury Auction. Titled Daphnis and Chloe: Chloe is Carried Off by the Methymneans, this piece shows a vibrant scene with human figures riding horses and carrying war instruments. At the center, two lovers, Daphnis and Chloe, can be seen embracing each other amidst the chaos. In the artist’s later years, Marc Chagall found himself immersed in the literature of late antiquity. This lithograph is Chagall’s take on Longus’ story of Daphnis and Chloe.

Another lot of interest is James McNeill Whistler’s Nocturne: The River at Battersea. In the late 19th century, James McNeill Whistler developed a keen interest in small towns and oceans. Most of his black-and-white lithographs were inspired by the Anglo-Japanese aesthetic. 561 lots will be on offer in this sale, including works from Henri Matisse and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. Works of Ukiyo-e Master Utagawa Hiroshige Come to Auction

Utagawa Hiroshige

Utagawa Hiroshige was a prominent ukiyo-e master known for his woodblock prints. The artist was born in Edo and took up painting at the age of 14. In 1811, Utagawa Hiroshige started learning painting under artist Utagawa Toyohiro. His early works mainly featured typical ukiyo-e subjects like kabuki actors. After the death of his teacher in the 1830s, Hiroshige’s work underwent a radical shift. He started creating landscapes, flowers, and bird prints, for which he became famous.

The upcoming Brunk Auctions event presents several woodblock prints of sea creatures and landscapes by Utagawa Hiroshige. This woodblock print series is also known as “Uozukushi,” meaning every variety of fish. This auction includes a late 19th century, untitled series of twenty large fish prints. Each one of the available works has an Ichiryusai seal. They also feature poems written in calligraphic text. Woodblock prints by the ukiyo-e master often included distinct colors that influenced Western artists like Claude Monet.

Also showcased are three Chinese sang-de-boeuf floor vases with blue underglaze. The vases feature six-character Kangxi marks and have oxblood red exteriors and white-glazed interiors. The sang-de-boeuf ceramic glaze was first created at the start of the 18th century in the porcelain kilns of Jingdezhen during the Kangxi period. The flambé glaze offers varying decorative effects.

The auction also highlights Chinese Dayazhai-style garden stools from the late Qing dynasty. The enamel-painted stools depict dragons, hibiscus blossoms, and chrysanthemums on a yellow foreground. The auction also offers works by Paul Jacoulet and Hiroshi Yoshida, Federal and British furniture pieces, a Sumac mat, Asian arts, jewelry, and silverware. Ancient and Ethnographic Art Comes to Auction With Artemis Gallery

Corinthian Aryballos Shielded Warriors, 1948 Provenance

The ancient city-state of Corinth was situated on the Isthmus of Corinth, connecting the Peloponnese to Greece. Since 1896, various archaeological excavations of Corinth have been conducted by the American School of Classical Studies at Athens and the Greek Ministry of Culture, revealing insights into antiquity. One of the key lots at the upcoming Ancient / Ethnographic Art Through The Ages auction, presented by Artemis Gallery, is a Corinthian aryballos created between 575 and 550 BCE. With a circular rim and a wide handle, the globular vessel is adorned with depictions of warriors holding shields. It is also decorated with concentric circles on the rim and the base. In its time, this aryballos was used to hold fragrant oils and perfumes for bathing.

Another highlight is a sterling silver necklace with a chain made of 26 twisted silver pieces and a pendant resembling Thor’s hammer. It was created by the Vikings of Northern Europe between the 10th and 12th century CE. Thor’s hammer often appeared on religious amulets during the Viking era to invoke the spirit of the fertility god. These were typically designed in silver. Photographic History of American Football from Artelisted

Historical Photo Football Princeton Practice 1931

Though the National Football League was formed in 1920, several years passed before it grew in popularity. Indicative of the spectacle of college football, the first stadiums at Harvard, Yale, and Princeton were fashioned after classical Greek stadia and the Roman Colosseum. Sports photography from this period often attempts to capture the grandiosity and athleticism of the Olympian, as can be seen in the photographic pieces for sale in this upcoming Artelisted event.

Of the many action shots in the collection are several capturing American football rivalries, such as one showing an unnamed player running through the line of a game between USC and UCLA around 1942. Other game photos include game information and a photo description on the reverse, including one depicting a match between Notre Dame and Northwestern: “With the Big 10 Championship tucked away, Northwestern University, undefeated this season, saw a national title snatched from its grasp when the fighting Irish of Notre Dame beat the Wildcats 26-6 at South Bend, Ind.”

One of the more unusual photos from the collection is that of two Los Angeles firefighters attempting to pass a football while somewhat precariously climbing a firefighter’s ladder. The reverse of the photo states that the photo was taken at the “famous Los Angeles fireman’s Football tea.” There is also an action photo from a children’s football game where the youngsters appear to be as enthusiastic as their older counterparts, though the football itself is nearly a third the size of the players.

The sale includes many more game shots, team shots, as well as individual photos of players, both named (Pinkie Schmidt, Bill Jummin, Fritz Graflund, Jerome Holland, etc.) and unnamed. Though most of the photos are original prints, there are also more than ten postcards up for bid. Schools represented include Cornell, Colgate, Notre Dame, Princeton, Harvard, Holy Cross, and more. Dalí’s Lithographs Will Lead New York City Estate Auction

Salvador Dali The Twelve Signs of The Zodiac

Salvador Dalí’s lithographs depicting the 12 zodiac signs are among the highlights of Showplace Antique’s upcoming New York City Estate Auction. Created in 1967, these lithographs depict the 12 signs, from Aries to Pisces, in a vibrant palette. This work illustrates the astrological symbols in its details, a departure from Dalí’s usual Surrealist dreamscapes. Among the 12 paintings, the viewer can observe the Capricorn sign represented as a horned goat with a mermaid’s tail, surrounded by water and earthly tones.

Art collectors will also find Burton Morris’ acrylic on wood painting. Morris is a Pop artist whose modern style is primarily inspired by everyday experiences. He focuses on objects that illustrate today’s pop culture. Describing his work, Morris’ website explains, “His distinctive style is characterized by radiant black outlines and vivid colors that emit energy in all of his artwork.” An example of this style, titled Dollar Sign, is offered in the upcoming event.
