Significant Oil Paintings by Carl Clemens Moritz Rungius and Edgar Alwin Payne Come to Sale With Doyle
May 15, 2024 11:00 EDTCarl Clemens Moritz Rungius was celebrated as a leading wildlife artist of America. His initial visits to Maine and Wyoming helped him closely study and paint animals. Rungius was so fascinated by the landscapes and wildlife of the region that the German-born artist immigrated to the United States in 1896. The upcoming Doyle auction will feature The Old Man of the Mountains, an oil on canvas painting by Rungius. Making direct observation of the wilderness, he portrayed the animal in its natural environment. Another interesting animal subject oil work is Terriers Ratting in a Stable. The painting is attributed to George Armfield, a British genre painter known for images of domesticated dogs. The artist was very fond of animals, and his paintings of horses and hounds were in great demand.
Edgar Alwin Payne’s Canyon de Chelly is a noteworthy oil painting in the catalog. Payne spent several months exploring and painting the canyon together with his spouse Elsie, who was also an artist. Rembrandt Bugatti’s bronze sculpture, Braque Couche ou Grand Saint Germain, also leads the listings. It features a dark brown patina on a wood base. Visit Doyle to view the complete catalog and register to bid in the upcoming The Estate Of Bartlett Burnap sale.
