French Arcade Automaton Theater

A French Arcade automaton theater (circa 1900s) with ten vignettes showing ten scenes is a leading lot in the Outsider, Folk, Contemporary & Fine Art Sale by Potter & Potter Auctions. This working automaton is made of wood, metal, oil paint, fabric, and wiring. It was probably from an arcade around the turn of the century. The French are revered for this tradition of beautifully constructed kinetic sculptures. There are 10 vignettes, each with a faux-painted Corinthian column, and stylized ornaments of a floral nature. The firemen are seen pumping water for the burning buildings in the background. The husband pulls on donkey ears while the wife pulls on the tail on a landscape background. A farmer is grabbing a pig in a farm outbuilding background. It has also been refitted with twinkly white Christmas tree lights. 

A rare production image from the 1914 silent film “In the Land of the Head Hunters” is also a standout lot. The film was directed by Edward Sheriff Curtis (American, 1868-1952). Cutis is known for his photographs and portraits of the Native American tribes. The caption label reads, “10 b / Yoklus, Fierce War Chief, Played by Bulootsa – / Kwakiutl Ref. Pg. 63. / Pioneer Cinematographer.” The sale will offer photographs, prints, Folk, Fine, and Contemporary art. All proceeds will benefit the Howard L. Museum Deaccession Bulk Sale by Augusta Auctions commences with a Poiret brown crepe-back silk satin wrap coat. Poiret, famously known as the king of fashion, was born Paul Poiret (1879-1944) in Paris. He was a French fashion designer, and master couturier during the first two decades of the 20th century. Poiret started as a cloth merchant in the poor neighborhood of Les Halles, Paris. He apprenticed to an umbrella maker, forced by his parents. But it led to him collecting scraps of silk left over from the cutting of umbrella patterns, and fashioned clothes for his dolls given by his sisters. By 1903 he had established the Paul Poiret fashion house liberating the female body from petticoats and corsets. The available satin wrap was made in 1917. This oversized wrap coat by Poiret has front panels ending in tasseled tabs with twisted silk fringe. The hanging sleeves have functional thread-covered pod buttons up to the cuffs. The sleeves are trimmed with a cuff, bone crepe back, and a satin lining.

Vintage couture lovers can also bid on an 1880 three-piece riding habit coat & skirt. Riding habits were women’s clothing for horseback riding since the mid-17th century. A formal habit for riding sidesaddle usually consisted of a tailored jacket with a long skirt to match. It is available for sale is made of heathered grey wool broadcloth & original cream wool knit-base broadcloth breeches. The coat has a notched collar, short lapels & full-length sleeves with CF button closure, fully lined in twill silk. The skirt is ankle length with a narrow waistband & CB hook closure. The upcoming auction from Leonard Auction features a wide range of fine artworks, furniture, decorative art, Asian antiques, and more. An etching by Joan Miró, titled ‘La Captive’ leads the sale. This aquatint and carborundum etching was created in 1969. Catalan artist and sculptor, Joan Miró was known for combining abstract art with surrealistic imagery. Born on April 20, 1893, in Barcelona, Miró was interested in art from an early age. At the age of 7, he started drawing and in 1907, he enrolled at the Fine Art Academy to study decorative and landscape arts. This etching lithograph procured from a private collector, in Barrington, Illinois is pencil-signed by the artist in the lower margin. 

Another notable lot is the American Eagle bullion set from 1995. In commemoration of ten years of American Eagle coins, the U.S. Mint produced this special five-coin set that includes four gold coins with the face value of $50, $25, $10, and $5 along with one-ounce ($1) silver coin. The gold coins bear effigies of liberty on the obverse while the reverse features American bald eagles. Bidders can also consider a Piaget 18-karat yellow gold bracelet wristwatch. 19th Century Painting by Edward Savage and Faience Jardinière by Delphin Massier Lead Locati LLC’s Upcoming Sale

Attributed to Edward Savage (American, 1761-1817) Portrait of Captain James Scott, Oil on Canvas

American artist Edward Savage is best known for his portrait of George Washington, completed in 1790. He also painted a large portrait group of the President’s family, including First Lady Martha Washington, two of her grandchildren, and their servant. An oil on canvas attributed to Savage is a key highlight of the upcoming sale by Locati LLC. It portrays an image of Captain James Scott, who was a British Royal Navy officer. Scott served in the Napoleonic Wars, the First Opium War, and the 1812 War. Another noteworthy oil work is attributed to Nicolaes Pieterszoon Berchem. The composition depicts the pastoral scenery of a sleeping boy and a herd of cows and goats. It has a 19th-century gilt gesso frame. The renowned Dutch Golden Age painter was known for his landscape imagery. 

A large French faience urn form jardinière by Delphin Massier also leads the listing. This late 19th Century piece is designed with faux marble with floral patterns, high relief flowers and large butterfly handles. It is signed “Delphin Massier/ Vallauris (A.M)” on the underside. ARNOLD ROTH Material Value Primitive Paintings.

Material from the collection of American cartoonist and author Jules Feiffer will be available in Swann Auction Galleries’ upcoming Illustration Art auction. Among the top lots is a 1946 Ink and watercolor by American cartoonist and illustrator Arnold Roth. Roth specializes in humorous illustrations and cartoons, with his work appearing in most major magazines since 1951. A unique quality of Roth’s illustrations is his mastery of exaggeration. His exaggeration is subtle, creating a new context that is easy to accept. The offered piece features Roth’s signature in the lower left corner and the inscription “For Jules, that top drawer fellow…. From his friend and admirer, Arnold Roth.” Another key lot in the sale is a cover art for The Spirit by Will Eisner, a pioneer of the American comic book medium. The Spirit is Eisner’s signature comic, a detective storybook with innovative, intriguing plots and great visuals. Each week, Eisner used various storytelling techniques that influenced later comic artists. 

Additional artworks of note in the catalog include a 1981 caricature illustration by David Levine depicting Jules Feiffer with a cigar. David Levine is regarded as one of the twentieth century’s most influential and talented caricaturists. As a revivalist of the 19th-century tradition, the artist was often compared to Honoré Daumier in his portrayals of American politics. Johan Jacob Rippen’s Baby Grand Piano and Hans J. Wegner’s Papa Bear Chair with Ottoman Come to Sale with Billings

Dutch broadcaster and piano manufacturer Johan Jacob Rippen worked in his father’s piano shop during his youth. However, Rippen was keen on building pianos himself. He crafted his first piano in 1937 and designed 50 within three years. His most significant achievement was the Maestro, a piano with strings stretched on a vertical frame. The upcoming auction by Billings will feature a baby grand piano crafted by Rippen. It is made of painted cast aluminum and lacquered pecan. Although smaller in size, it has the sound quality and looks of a grand piano. Baby grand pianos are compact and mostly measure less than 7 feet in length. Paul Evans’ Argente coffee table also leads the listing. It is built with welded, scored, textured, painted aluminum, and slate. The celebrated American furniture designer was inspired by the Brutalist style of sculpted metal furnishings. 

Hans J. Wegner’s Papa Bearand Ottoman chair set is another noteworthy lot. The design combines his skillful wood joinery techniques with sleek form. Known as the “Master of Chairs”, Wegner focused on simple and functional exterior. Heather McGill, head of the Sculpture Department at Cranbrook Academy of Art (1991-2017), resided in the suburbs of Detroit for more than two decades. A recipient of the Louis Comfort Tiffany Biennial Award for her works, she was greatly inspired by the city’s industrial legacy. The custom car and surf culture of southern California, McGill’s native region, also influenced her works. An untitled mixed media wall sculpture by the artist is a key highlight of the upcoming sale by Everard Auctions and Appraisals. The sculpture is created with stainless steel, lacquer, aluminum, and urethane foam. At present, McGill lives and practices in Santa Fe. Another striking sculpture is an open conical form woodwork by Bud Latven. It is crafted with turned and segmented Prairie Rutusa, Cocobelo, African Ebony, and Aronite wood. Latven’s wood-turning skills are known for motivating several craftspeople the world over. 

George Ohr’s ceramic puzzle mug, signed on the verso, also leads the listing. It is designed with brown glaze and pierced sides. The handle is embossed with twist and flower patterns. This upcoming auction, offered by Christie’s, presents a range of elegant timepieces from luxury brands. A key highlight is a unique Asprey Rolex Daytona watch with a turquoise-colored dial. The model found here has a 40-millimeter case forged in white gold. Additional features include three sub-dials, automatic watch movement, and a Triplock screw-down crown. The available Rolex Daytona 116509 model made its debut in 2004 and has since been a favorite among celebrities, business tycoons, and watch connoisseurs alike. 

A rare and limited-edition Patek Philippe Nautilus 3700/1 wristwatch is also available. This watch with date and early-type stainless steel bracelet has a 42-millimeter case. The lot is accompanied by a Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives confirming the production of the present watch in 1979 and its subsequent sale on June 6, 1980. It comes with an automatic movement. A reputed Swiss watchmaker based in Geneva, Patek Philippe introduced the Nautilus series in 1976.

Charles Schulz’s Original Peanuts Comic Strip, Hunt Slonem’s “Marmoset” Lead Helmuth Stone Gallery’s Upcoming Sale

Charles Schulz, considered one of the most prolific artists of the 20th century, was an American cartoonist. Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on November 26, 1922, Schulz was best known for creating a highly successful comic strip, Peanuts. From an early age, he loved to draw. In 1937, a drawing of his boyhood dog Spike was featured in Robert Ripley’s syndicated panel of ‘Ripley’s Believe It or Not!’ The upcoming Fine Art & Antiques Auction, offered by Helmuth Stone Gallery, highlights an original Peanuts comic strip by Charles Schulz. This black and white strip from January 29, 1989 comes framed behind glass. The offered lot depicts iconic, quirky characters like Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Lucy van Pelt, and others. 

Another highlight is an oil on-board artwork by Hunt Slonem. Titled Marmoset, this rare early painting was made in 1988. It depicts a gold monkey in a lush green tree. An American painter, sculptor, and printmaker, Slonem is famous for his paintings of bunnies, butterflies, and tropical birds rendered in a Neo-Expressionist style.
