Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on November 26, 1922, Schulz was best known for creating a highly successful comic strip, Peanuts. From an early age, he loved to draw. In 1937, a drawing of his boyhood dog Spike was featured in Robert Ripley’s syndicated panel of ‘Ripley’s Believe It or Not!’ The upcoming Fine Art & Antiques Auction, offered by Helmuth Stone Gallery, highlights an original Peanuts comic strip by Charles Schulz. Premier Americana Sale Offers Collection of Katherine “Kitty Sue” Pea Featuring Vibrant 1845 Pennsylvanian Schwenkfelder Folk Drawing

Important Pennsylvania Schwenkfelder Folk Art Fraktur-style Drawing

An important 1845 Pennsylvanian Schwenkfelder folk artwork will be offered on June 21, 2024: Premier Americana – Day Three: Collection of Katherine “Kitty Sue” Pea sale. The sale is hosted by Jeffrey S. Evans & Assoc, Inc. This piece is a Fraktur-style drawing that depicts a row of vibrant townhouses under an exuberant garland of stylized flowers, strawberries, and a pair of distelfinks/lovebirds. Earlier Fraktur artworks, like the offered example, were executed entirely by hand. The medium is watercolor on paper, housed in a modern frame. Fraktur is a highly artistic and elaborate folk art created between 1740 and 1860 by the Pennsylvania Dutch. The word “Fraktur” derives from the Latin frāctūra (“a break”); thus the letters and designs have clear beginnings and ends with individual strokes that make each letter visible and often emphasized. Fraktur-style drawings were executed in ink and watercolors and are found in a wide variety of forms, like the floral and figurative scenes of this painting.

The upcoming American folk art sale also offers a 19th-century carved and painted tobacco/cigar store trade figure. The wooden figure of a Native American has an eagle headdress and wolf-skin robe. He holds his right hand aloft and his eyes are raised to the sky. The piece retains an old painted surface. Notable among furniture is a patriotic folk art carved walnut secretary by John Hobart (Maine, 1841 – 1918). Beyond American and ethnographic collectibles, the sale will offer furniture, jewelry, watches and clocks, and textiles. Artworks by Significant Figures of the Charleston Renaissance Lead Brunk Auctions’ Upcoming Sale

Elizabeth O'Neill Verner

Between the first and second World Wars, the city of Charleston in South Carolina witnessed a cultural revival of arts, architecture, and literature. Artistic expressions flourished with painters, writers, and historical preservationists coming together. This phase is known as the Charleston Renaissance. Elizabeth O’Neill Verner was one of the four leading artists of the movement. She was a noteworthy figure of South Carolina during the 20th century. Charleston Rooftop View, a pastel work by Verner on textured board, is a key highlight of the upcoming sale by Brunk Auctions. With sharp detailing, the illustration is rendered realistically and yet evinces subtle hints of Impressionism. Flower Seller by Alice Ravenel Huger Smith, another major artist of the Charleston Renaissance movement, also leads the listings. Smith preferred rural subjects unlike her contemporaries. The watercolor work on paper exemplifies the influence of various Japanese styles on the artist.

The sale also includes a rare Pilgrim Century turned great chair. Made in New England (1650 – 1700), mostly Massachusetts, it was crafted in mixed woods with mellow old patinated surface.
