Charles Green Shaw was a successful freelance writer for The New Yorker, Smart Set, and Vanity Fair in the 1920s and 1930s. Then, in his late thirties, he took an interest in art. Shaw studied art under the watchful eye of Thomas Hart Benton and George Luks. He soon became a compelling figure in Abstract art while helping to launch the American Abstract Artists organization. Headlining the upcoming Winter Market Auction offered by Eldred’s is one of Shaw’s works, titled Cosmic Flight. This abstract oil painting features black and gray brushstrokes with red, yellow, and white contrasting colors.
A Queen Anne lowboy from the 1760s is also highlighted. This mahogany table features a full-width drawer over three side-by-side drawers of varying widths. The piece has acorn drops and cabriole legs that end in padded feet. The table stands 31 inches tall and is 32.5 inches wide. Others lots of interest include a 2007 horse portrait print from Joe Andoe, a mother and child statue by Armando Amaya, a late Gothic carved oak tankard, and more.
