An American artist, Jimmy Lee Sudduth, was never inclined to use store-bought pigments; he claimed, “My hands is [sic] my brushes. The brushes die when I die.” Sudduth rarely worked with canvases or real brushes as he preferred to use his fingers to paint. He created paintings with peculiar mediums, using mixtures of earth and sugar or colors extracted from weeds and vegetables. An example of his work will be featured in the upcoming Fine Estate Antiques Auction, presented by Briggs Auction.
The sale will offer works from many other 18th and 19th century artists alongside Jimmy Lee Sudduth, including Loren Dunlap, Maria Martinez, and Jaroslav Vesin. A Bulgarian painter, Jaroslav Friedrich Julius Vesin was a prestigious artist in the 18th century who drew inspiration from his surroundings. His paintings mostly incorporated scenes from the countryside and landscape. The oil painting presented in this sale depicts gypsies in a village. Interested bidders can also find a five-piece sterling silver coffee and tea service. This complete set includes a coffee pot, teapot, sugar pot, cream pitcher, and waste bowl.
