James Edward Buttersworth was best known for capturing marine settings in his paintings. Often considered one of the best American maritime artists, Buttersworth’s work is highlighted in Skinner’s upcoming American Furniture and Decorative Arts auction. Titled Packet Ship Kennebec in New York Harbor, the available piece depicts the Kennebec and several other ships caught in a storm. The Kennebec was the largest ship built by the William Rogers shipbuilding firm.
The auction also features items from John James Audubon, Leander Allen Plummer, George Loring Brown, and others. One of the pieces from Audubon studies an American White Pelican. The auction house notes that the engraving, printing, and hand-coloring of this lot were done by Robert Havell around 1836. A federal carved mahogany and veneer tall case clock can also be found in the auction. For more information, visit Bidsquare.
