Louis Icart (French, 1888 – 1950) impressed his aunt with his talent in drawing at an early age. She brought Icart with her to Paris in 1907. There, he dedicated himself to painting, drawing, and etching. Soon, he designed his works and title pages for the magazine La Critique Théâtrale. Icart was in demand and hired by numerous fashion houses. Icart’s drawings were particularly fashionable during the Art Deco period. In 1914, he met and married Fanny Volmers, an employee of the Paquin fashion house. She was his muse, modeling for many of his works. Portrait de Fanny, completed in 1935 by Louis Icart, is a unique oil on canvas of Fanny Volmers Icart. It is a hand-signed painting leading the upcoming Autumn Sale of Modern & Contemporary Art, offered by Dane Fine Art. Icart painting enthusiasts can also consider other works like Le The au Jardin, an original oil on canvas available in this sale.

The upcoming sale at RR Auction will feature Thomas Jefferson’s first inaugural address to Congress, from March 4, 1801. Printed on silk, the rare broadside by Jefferson is an affirmation of the principles of American politics and philosophy. Jefferson argued that the divisive 1800 election reflected a real revolution in terms of government principles and its form as of 1776. The new president had to adopt both a conciliatory and authoritative tone in his first official address, which is considered a seminal speech in American politics. His inaugural address presented a statement of American ideals in memorable and moving language— notably the phrase “entangling alliances.” About five copies of President Jefferson’s inaugural speech are known to exist.

American artist Will Barnet is celebrated for his paintings and prints portraying human beings and animals in everyday life as well as in ethereal scenes. Although he had a representational approach, the simple figures and flat surfaces illustrated his experiment with abstraction. Sleep Walk, an oil on canvas by Barnet, is a key highlight of the upcoming sale of the artist’s estate from Swann Auction Galleries. The artist uses clean lines and solid colors in a Minimalist style. It is titled in ink on the stretcher and signed in oil, lower right recto. Another notable oil on canvas in the catalog is Edward Steichen’s Child Seated in a Garden. Steichen produced several oil paintings during the early 1900s that combined Symbolist and Neo-Impressionist styles. Although he was more interested in photography than painting, he went on to create a large volume of paintings, exhibited across Paris and New York.
E. Ambrose Webster’s Summer Garden, Provincetown also leads the listings. A keen observer of nature, he was a significant landscape painter at Provincetown Art Colony. Inspired by the vivid color scheme of Monet, Webster also gave a distinct character to the lighting effect in his works.
