George Washington Leather Fire Buckets and Giddeon Roberts Tall Case Clock Available at New England Auctions This September
Sep 21, 2023 10:00 EDTNew England Auctions’ upcoming sale presents over 440 lots from the collection of Lincoln and Jean Sander, including American and European antiques, as well as antique pewter and Americana. Among the top lots is a pair of George Washington leather fire buckets. These fire buckets are primarily decorated with a funerary urn adorned with the letter “W,” standing on a pedestal inscribed with the date “1800” to commemorate Washington’s death. The slogan above reads “Protection in Danger,” with “No. 1 and 2.” Below is a streamer with the name “Hawks Lincoln.”
Additional lots of interest in this auction include a Giddeon Roberts tall case clock. Following his service in the Revolutionary War, Connecticut native Gideon Roberts began producing affordable clocks. Roberts used painted paper dials as well as wooden movements in place of the brass movements that were common at the time. In a Neoclassical or Federal style, the available clock has a tall case made of pine and a flat-topped hood. In the label, Giddeon Roberts of Bristol, CT, is listed as the maker of this woodwork clock. Interested collectors can also consider a pair of Henry Winter carved birds, an early 19th-century pipe box with a fishtail crest, and two small hourglasses.
