Important Paintings From the Estate of Will Barnet Come to Sale with Swann Auction Galleries
Sep 21, 2023 12:00 EDTAmerican artist Will Barnet is celebrated for his paintings and prints portraying human beings and animals in everyday life as well as in ethereal scenes. Although he had a representational approach, the simple figures and flat surfaces illustrated his experiment with abstraction. Sleep Walk, an oil on canvas by Barnet, is a key highlight of the upcoming sale of the artist’s estate from Swann Auction Galleries. The artist uses clean lines and solid colors in a Minimalist style. It is titled in ink on the stretcher and signed in oil, lower right recto. Another notable oil on canvas in the catalog is Edward Steichen’s Child Seated in a Garden. Steichen produced several oil paintings during the early 1900s that combined Symbolist and Neo-Impressionist styles. Although he was more interested in photography than painting, he went on to create a large volume of paintings, exhibited across Paris and New York.
E. Ambrose Webster’s Summer Garden, Provincetown also leads the listings. A keen observer of nature, he was a significant landscape painter at Provincetown Art Colony. Inspired by the vivid color scheme of Monet, Webster also gave a distinct character to the lighting effect in his works.
