Vintage Silver Teaware and Antique Chest-on-Chest Lead Doyle’s Upcoming Sale

George III Sterling Silver Tea and Coffee Service Benjamin Smith, London, 1814-1816

Known as the English national drink, tea was once associated with the wealthy echelons of its society. Believed to have medicinal properties, the beverage was highly expensive for many years. In various classic British paintings, rich silver teaware signified a sense of exclusivity. An English tea service initially consisted of a tea pot, a sugar bowl, and a creamer jug. While the kettle and waste bowl were added much later, the coffee pots were introduced in the George III era. The upcoming Doyle auction will feature a George III sterling silver tea and coffee service (Benjamin Smith, London). It comprises two teapots, a coffee pot, cream jug, open sugar bowl, waste bowl, and a two-handled tray. Each piece has a squat globular body with reeded shoulder and is raised on artistic winged paw feet.

Five thumb-molded short drawers, a fan-carved drawer, and four graduated long drawers constitute the top section. The lower section has three graduated drawers with a frame attached to claw-and-ball feet. Visit Doyle to view the complete catalog and register to bid in the upcoming Boston Collects sale.

Anselm Reyle 2004 Untitled mixed media foil on canvas

Born in Berlin, German artist Anselm Reyle is celebrated for his found-object sculptures and large-scale paintings. It depicts the magic of smelting chimneys, glowing lights, and clouds of smoke. The American artist was well known for his characteristic industrial landscapes. László Moholy-Nagy Print & Cover Picture of Robert Frank’s The Americans Offered in Christie’s Photographs Auction

LÁSZLÓ MOHOLY–NAGY (1895–1946)

“The enemy of photography is the convention, the fixed rules of ‘how to do.’ The salvation of photography comes from the experiment,” László Moholy-Nagy once said. A unique, untitled gelatin silver print, signed by Moholy-Nagy, is on offer in the upcoming Photographs Auction, offered by Christie’s. László Moholy-Nagy was a Hungarian-born artist shaped by Dadaism, Suprematism, Constructivism, and debates about photography. A Modernist and a restless experimentalist from the outset, he influenced post-war art education in the United States. One of his greatest legacies was the version of Bauhaus teaching he brought to the United States, where he established the highly influential Institute of Design in Chicago. The available photograph was made between 1928 and 1929, several years after Moholy-Nagy began experimenting with photograms in the early 1920s. It involves images created without a camera, where objects are placed on photographic paper and then exposed to light. The mystery of the image exemplifies Moholy’s talent of blending art forms and pushing boundaries of the media he employed.

Several images from Robert Frank’s celebrated book titled The Americans will also be available in the sale. An early gelatin silver print of Trolley – New Orleans, 1955, one of his most famous works and the one chosen to appear on the cover, is a leading lot. The picture captures trolley bus windows with a group of people ranging in race, gender, and age, each looking directly at the photographer, displaying an array of expressions. Frank was fascinated by the energy of a parade and suddenly acted on impulse to turn around and snap this picture of a trolley passing through the French Quarter. Additionally, the sale will offer classic, post-war, and contemporary photographs and prints. View the complete catalog of the Photographs Auction by visiting Christie’s.

Modern Works of Art by Ed Clark and Anish Kapoor Come to Sale with Phillips

Ed Clark Title Gray Force

Abstract Expressionist artist Edward (Ed) Clark was known for his broad and robust brushstrokes and large-sized, ovoid canvases. He came to be appreciated as a Modernist much later in his career. He pioneered the skillful use of the economical push broom and the elliptical canvases to create extraordinary artworks. One such striking painting by Ed Clark, titled Gray Force, is a key highlight of the upcoming sale from Phillips. It is marked by bold horizontal strokes of sky blue, French grey, slate, and white. The oval canvas best expresses the movement beyond the limits of linearity. Clark’s iconic tool, the push broom, helped him in rendering “the big sweep” and expressing his creativity on large scale.

Anish Kapoor’s Untitled polished and lacquered steel surface also leads the listings. It flips the reflection of the viewer and their surroundings upside down in emerald green light. Created in 2011, it is a colorful manifestation of Kapoor’s lifelong fascination with concave mirrors. Another noteworthy installation is Urs Fischer’s The Trouble with Being Born. Inspired from Dadaism and Pop Art, Fischer creates an active fountain with cast brass, an electric pump, and a brass spray nozzle. Visit Phillips to view the complete catalog and register to bid in the upcoming New Now sale.
