Bowers Die State II. Wear is light and the border dentils are complete on this attractive slate-gray Small Eagle type coin. Clashing on the reverse field between STATES and OF denotes the later die state of this issue. Detail is sharp despite remnants of adjustment marks on the Liberty portrait. Adjustment marks are also visible along the left and right hand obverse borders, but the definition of the stars and dentils is unaffected. (NGC ID# 24X2, Variety PCGS# 39996, Base PCGS# 96858)

1909-11 T206 Old Mill Ty Cobb (Bat On Shoulder) PSA VG 3 – The Finest of Only Four Graded Examples!

1909-11 T206 Old Mill Ty Cobb (Bat On Shoulder) PSA VG 3 - The Finest of Only Four Graded Examples!

It should come as no surprise that the David Hall T206 collection would contain a number of surprising rarities. When you think of “T206” and “Rare” the usual suspects are brands names like “Uzit,” “Drum,” “Lenox,” or Hindu-Red or Brown. What about a rare “Old Mill?” Certainly should be possible considering Old Mill is one of the few brands to feature the obscure players from the southern leagues would be the best culprit. Right? No. As a matter of fact, one of the rarest “Old Mill” backs hits us right in the face with a now classic image of baseball legend Ty Cobb holding his “Bat on Shoulder” as we would all expect him to be portrayed. This rarity seems to hide in plain sight going woefully underappreciated and very easily overlooked. The title is not a mistake.

Graded PSA VG 3. The overall total PSA pop is over 900 submissions (w/any qualified). As of this writing, only four are confirmed with a Old Mill brand back! There are no condition elements one doesn’t expect to see in a solid mid-grade example. That pop number is usually reserved the most celebrated of rare tobacco brands. As an added bonus, this card is the highest graded example – with no equal – of the precious few examples known!

8th C. Viking Silver Bracelet w/ Stamped Motifs

8th C. Viking Silver Bracelet w/ Stamped Motifs

For every order (single or multiple lots) in this auction, Artemis Gallery will donate 25 meals to Community Food Share, a Feeding America Food Bank.

Northern Europe, Viking / Norse culture, ca. 8th to 11th century CE. An elegant, hammered 98% silver bracelet of circular form with tapering terminals and a narrow opening between them. The exterior face of the bracelet is stamped with repeated and regular triangles, each with low granulations within its form. Some shallow triangular stamps are also on the interior. The stamped triangle pattern was very popular in the Viking world, although its meaning is unknown. This lovely bracelet is wearable! Size: 2.8″ W (7.1 cm); silver quality is 98%; total weight is 26.8 grams

A piece such as this would have been made in a specialized workshop centered around a hearth, probably using the lost wax casting technique. The important Viking metalworking shops correspond to their great trading ports and proto-urban centers – Birka, Helgo, Sigtuna, and Lund in Sweden, Ribe, Haithabu (Hedeby), and Fyrkat in Denmark, and Kaupang and Trondheim in Norway. Silver was the principal currency of the Viking world, which stretched from Russia to northern Canada at the height of their influence. In many places, the Vikings kept silver not as coins, but as jewelry, a wearable currency form that was not subject to the authority of a monarch or mint. One of the most common archaeological finds from the Viking period is a hoard of metal objects, often buried in the earth or deposited in bodies of water, like river beds.

According to Dr. Cox, “All classes of women in the ancient world wore jewelry, which was considered both as adornment and as visible evidence of wealth. Many of the surviving pieces, particularly earrings, necklaces, and bracelets, were preserved because they were buried with the deceased. Others were accidentally lost in baths or toilets, or due to the vicissitudes of nature and war.”

21K Gold Necklace w/ Egyptian Scarabs, Djed Pillars

21K Gold Necklace w/ Egyptian Scarabs, Djed Pillars

For every order (single or multiple lots) in this auction, Artemis Gallery will donate 25 meals to Community Food Share, a Feeding America Food Bank.

Ancient Egypt, New Kingdom to Late Dynastic Period, 18th to 31st Dynasty, ca. 1549 to 332 BCE. A fabulous necklace composed of seven faience scarab pendants and six faience djed pillar pendants, strung on a modern 21K gold necklace. Most of the scarabs are charms, with abstract symbols carved into their flat undersides; this includes one featuring bowls and ostrich feathers, another with an ankh at its center, and one with a rope symbol. Four others have hieroglyphs. The Djed Pillar was commonly placed as an amulet near the spine of a mummy, and is listed in the Book of the Dead as part of a spell which can be used to reanimate the use of the mummy’s spine so that it can sit up, resurrected. It is associated with Osiris, representing his spine, and is one of the oldest symbols in Egyptian mythology. All of the scarabs are made from an opaque white faience, while the djed pillars are pale blue faience. A wonderful example of ancient art meets modern fashion! Size of all scarabs (approximately): 0.75″ W (1.9 cm); length of chain: 17.5″ L (44.4 cm)
