Artworks by American Artists Guy Carleton Wiggins & Robert Henri Lead Fall Fine Art & Antique Auction

Guy Carleton Wiggins Oil On Canvas

Guy Carleton Wiggins (American, 1883 – 1962) often painted scenes of New York City. Wiggins was trained by his father Carleton Wiggins, an accomplished American landscape painter. He also learned from veterans like William Merritt Chase and Robert Henri. Wiggins mastered Impressionistic work with a distinctly American technique. At the age of 20, he became the youngest artist to have his artwork shown in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Among his most famous paintings are portrayals of New York City’s snowy streets, landmarks, and towering skyscrapers during winter. Leading the upcoming Fall Fine Art & Antique Auction from Wiederseim Associates, Inc is Wiggins’ oil on canvas of a snow scene in New York City, titled Washington Square. It is a signed painting dated November 3, 1980.

An 1878 oil on wood panel titled Brittany by Robert Henri, Guy Carleton Wiggins’ teacher, is another highlight in the sale. Robert Henri (1865 – 1929) was a founder of the Ashcan School and a member of “The Eight.” Henri received his formal art education in Paris, where he identified strongly with the Impressionists. After returning home, he revolted against American academic art, as reflected by the conservative National Academy of Design. The Ashcan School contributed to American realism, depicting urban life in a Brutalist style. For clock enthusiasts, the sale will offer Augustine Neisser Germantown’s Queen Anne walnut tall case clock, from circa 1750. Striking Pear-Cut GIA Diamonds Come to Sale With Bid Global International Auctioneers LLC

7.52 ct, E/FL, Pear cut GIA Graded Diamond. Appraised Value: $1,395,900

Lodewyk van Berquem of Belgium, the 15th-century diamond cutter, is well known for originally crafting the pear-cut diamond. The Flemish jeweler invented the scaif, a device that significantly transformed the industry. He is also credited with placing facets in diamond cuts and introducing symmetry in cutting. When the stone was initially introduced, it was not very popular since the cutting process caused a loss of the rough diamond. But eventually it came to be appreciated for the smoothness of its facets and elongated look, which made fingers appear slimmer. Two pear-cut GIA graded diamonds highlight the upcoming sale from Bid Global International Auctioneers LLC. One weighs 10.02 carats, whereas the other weighs 7.52 carats. Both teardrop-shaped pieces have curvy, rounded bottoms and taper upwards into a pointed tip. The figure is well suited for solitaires in engagement rings, pendants and earrings.

A natural fancy brownish yellow diamond, weighing 16.18 carats, also leads the listings. The yellow hue is caused by the nitrogen in the stone. Such diamonds were formed in very high temperatures and pressure below the earth’s surface. Irving Penn’s Nude 58 Alongside Diane Arbus Photo Lead Brunk’s Photography | Modern Art + Design Auction

Nude 58 by Irving Penn is a leading lot in the upcoming Photography | Modern Art + Design Auction, offered by Brunk Auctions. It is an image of a bare contoured body by Penn, taken in 1950. The available platinum palladium print on Arches paper is dated June 1976 and hand coated by the photographer, editioned 11/33. This print was exhibited in the National Museum of American Art and the National Portrait Gallery in 1990. Irving Penn’s first Vogue cover was published in October 1943. Just a year later, in 1944, he volunteered for the American Field Service despite having a heart condition. Even during the horrors of war, Penn’s artistic eye came through. Penn’s fashion photography, portraits, and still lifes are what he is known for today. The amalgamation of portraiture, fashion, and minimalism is evident in his work and continues to inform the art of photography.

An image from the Junior Interstate Ballroom Dance Champions in New York in 1962, captured by Diane Arbus (American, 1923 – 1971) is another notable lot. This black-and-white image shows two child dancers swaying with their trophies upfront.
