Leading the sale is a lithograph of Thomas Hart Benton’s Sorghum Mill from 1969. An American painter and muralist, Thomas Hart Benton was a key figure of the Regionalist art movement of the 1930s. A common theme in his paintings is the depiction of the everyday activities of ordinary people. Portraits, landscapes, and people working in factories, farms, and urban centers were among the subjects of his drawings and paintings. Throughout Benton’s murals, a vibrant representation of American life in the early days of the country is depicted. An everyday rural scene is depicted in this matted lithograph. 

Another lot of interest in this sale is an oil painting by William Franklin Jackson titled Coast Near San Francisco. A talented painter from California, Jackson was best known for his paintings of poppy fields. He incorporated Impressionist elements into his paintings to evoke the vibrant spring wildflowers, such as poppies and lupins, that carpeted California hillsides in the spring. Schmitt Horan & Co Presents E. Howard’s Astronomical Regulator Clocks and Rare Sun – Star Chronometer Aviator’s Navigational Watch

Unlike regular clocks in the 1700s and later, astronomical regulators were known to be accurate time-keeping devices with precise finishing. Few companies made such clocks designed mainly for scientific observations. One such firm was E. Howard and Company of Boston, reputed for its quality clocks, regulators, watches, and scales since 1842. Howard’s No. 61 standing astronomical regulator is currently up for bid in the upcoming auction at Schmitt Horan & Co. This particular clock has a silvered dial that indicates hours, minutes, and seconds. It is enclosed in a walnut case with burl walnut details and bold moldings. Other features include a pendulum rod, four mercury vials, door key, and two pulleys.  

Several other antique clocks and regulators are also on offer, including a rare and important Sun-Star Chronometer aviator’s navigational watch. This watch was designed by Ulysse Nardin, LeLocle, for the Batori Computer Co. Leading the upcoming Editions & Works on Paper sale from Phillips is a B. J. O. Nordfeldt white-line woodcut print titled Wash Day. A painter and printmaker, Nordfeldt translated portraits, landscapes, and still lifes into striking visual compositions with his energetic and direct brushwork. In addition to Fauvist and Expressionist paintings, the artist was influenced by woodblock prints from Japan and his time living in New Mexico. He painted Cézanne-like images of Native American dances as his first works in New Mexico. Other works by Nordfeldt, such as etchings, lithographs, and paintings, explored the rugged landscape of the Southwest. Bathers is another interesting white-line woodcut work by the artist offered in the auction.

Another lot of interest in this sale are two prints of Christo’s Wrapped Monument to Leonardo, Project for Piazza della Scala, Milan. Christo Vladimirov Javacheff and his creative partner, Jeanne-Claude, joined the New Realist movement that sought to depict ordinary life without exaggerating it. European-Cut Diamond Ring & Boivin Violet Brooch Highlight Important Jewelry Auction by Doyle

One old European-cut diamond ring is leading the upcoming Important Jewelry Auction, presented by Doyle. The central diamond weighs 5.09 carats. It is decorated on the side by two tapered baguette-cut diamonds. The central European-cut diamond has F color and VVS1 clarity, according to its GIA report. Another notable piece of jewelry in the sale is a Van Cleef & Arpels Kashmir sapphire ring. The central cushion-shaped sapphire weighs 3.04 carats. The ring also has 24 round diamonds weighing approximately 1.45 carats in the halo and the band. The sapphire is from Kashmir and has no indications of heating or treatment, verified by accompanying Gubelin report.

Another notable lot in the catalog is a ‘Violet’ clip brooch by René Boivin. It resembles a cluster of flowers with movable oval pink tourmalines, round rubies, and four leaves of round green garnets. It is signed by René Boivin, with maker’s mark and French assay marks. The gemstones are set in 18-karat gold. This brooch is from the Sharon Blaisedell Casdin collection. René Boivin (1864 – 1917) founded his namesake firm in Paris during the 1890s. Boivin is considered to have produced some of the most original and finely wrought jewels of the 20th century. What set the company’s jewelry apart was the use of colored stones and modern and sculptural designs. René’s wife Jeanne Boivin (1871 – 1959), as well as Suzanne Vuilereme, Juliette Moutarde, and Jeanne’s daughter, Germaine Boivin, produced some of the most well-known Boivin jewels. One highlighted lot is Robert Wyland’s original sea life work titled Swimmers. It portrays two sea turtles diving deep into the ocean. American artist and conservationist Wyland is renowned for his paintings and sculptures of underwater sea life. Leading the upcoming late-October sale from Kodner Galleries is a 2006 Ford GTX1. This vehicle is a modified version of Ford’s GT mid-engine sports car. Designed to incorporate both a removable three-piece hardtop and a storable soft top, the Ford GTX1 aimed to make entering and exiting the sporty vehicle easier. Its shape and design recall the award-winning GT40 racing car produced during the 1960s. The available 2006 Ford GTX1 is one of approximately 38 vehicles to undergo the GTX1 modification. It was modified by Kip Ewing, Ford’s GT chief engineer. This vehicle comes to auction with 2,650 miles, a Ricardo six-speed manual transmission, and a metallic gray exterior color. Another notable vehicle offered in the upcoming auction is a 1969 Jaguar E-Type with a light blue exterior.

Queen Victoria ruled the United Kingdom from 1837 to 1901. The period in which she reigned is now called the Victorian era. It witnessed changes in industry, society, fashion, and, of course, jewelry. Early Victorian or Romantic Period jewelry refers broadly to the British jewelry produced during this time. An Early Victorian brooch (circa 1830s – 1840s) comprised of a 14-karat gold and sterling silver frame is leading the upcoming October Thriller Auction, presented by Akiba Galleries. The Victorian brooch features a floral vine decorated with beaded pearl inserts and garnished with diamonds. The diamonds weigh approximately 3.5 carats. Other highlights include a GIA-certified Chinese vintage necklace featuring 43 mottled green round jadeite beads in a graduated single strand connected by a 14-karat yellow gold clasp (mid-20th century), as well as a Mughal period (circa 18th century), hand-stranded necklace. The latter item features cultured baroque pearls, citrine, and diamonds, decorated on the reverse with polychrome enamel set with 22-karat gold from North India.

Apart from vintage jewelry, the auction will offer over 600 lots of fine art, vintage bags, furniture, and more. An oil painting depicting a laughing police officer wearing headgear, signed along the bottom left “Yue Minjun” and dated “2005” is another noteworthy lot. The painting is attributed to Yue Minjun (Chinese, b. 1962). Among vintage collectibles is an Hermès Kelly 25 handbag in soft black leather with gold-tone hardware.
