Day 1: Luxury Estates & Private Collections

Italian polychrome marquetry inlaid floral panel

When an object is described as “larger than life,” it is usually about importance rather than size. However, this idiom applies— in both a literal and figural sense—to the two-day August auction by Great Gatsby’s Auction Gallery. It is a sale of magnitude and astounding proportions, and many pieces are truly larger than life. 1,100 distinct lots will be available over both days, with categories ranging from furniture and sculpture to jewelry and decorative art.

Day 1: A strong opening, the first day takes samples from centuries of design and decorative art. The leading lot is an early 20th-century pool table that sports luxury details (enamel and mother of pearl diamond accents) and a satinwood inlay. This collection is expansive and whimsical, including a colorful wall weaving sculpture and a Japanese monkey teapot.

American Indian and Western Art

Originally, tomahawks were stones fastened to wooden handles. It wasn’t until the Europeans introduced metalwork to the American Indians that tomahawks such as this one, available in the American Indian and Western Art auction presented by Cowan’s Auctions, were possible. Sadly, in the years ahead, American Indian tribes would often need to use tomahawks to defend themselves against the very people who showed them how to make it.

Among the best lots with a low estimated price is an untitled drawing by Inuit artist Simon Tookoome. The piece provokes a sense of doubt and issues with identity. The lots with the highest estimated value are the previously-mentioned tomahawk head and a Navajo-style rug by Susie Yazzie. The rug was created using the traditional Navajo storm pattern weaving method. The history of storm pattern weaving was never written down, causing historians to speculate over its origins and significance to the Navajo.

The auction of tribal art primarily presents everyday items such as tomahawks, rugs, and moccasins, along with fine art, used by people from several American Indian tribes. Bidding in this auction began on July 25th and will end on August 5th. With the starting bids of many lots sitting below $100, there are many opportunities for beginning collectors to acquire one or more lots. Those interested in any of these lots can view each one and bid on Bidsquare until August 5th.

Mid-Summer Fine Art and Photography Sale

Modern art’s influence within the last century has been infectious, to say the least. Classical realism began to fade with the rise of impressionism, opening the floodgates to an entirely new generation of artistic forms and styles. The 20th century and contemporary art are on full display in the upcoming Mid-Summer Fine Art and Photography Sale presented by Creighton-Davis Gallery

Leading the way in this auction are three coordinating pieces from the pop artist Tom Wesselmann, a founder of the international pop art and screen-printing movement. Depicting a still life in one massive painting and a modernist nude in two others, Wesselmann’s style established a precedent for the following decades of modern art. International art also plays a significant role in this auction, with a series of serigraph works from Jiang Tie-Feng, a Chinese artist whose layered paintings walk the line between abstraction and realism.

Photography from Ansel Adams, abstract sculptures from Helen Finch, and countless other imaginative works are contained within this auction. With estimates ranging from $100 to $60,000, this sale has pieces perfect for both the casually interested and the established collector. View the full catalog and register to bid on Bidsquare

California and Western Paintings and Sculpture

Armin Carl Hansen (1886-1957)

Bonhams held the first-ever dedicated sale of Californian and Western Paintings on June 1980. Keeping with their long-standing tradition of consistently leading the market, on August 6, they will be presenting an exceptional auction of California and Western Paintings & Sculpture. It will include 174 works by some of the most celebrated California impressionism artists such as August Gay, Selden Connor Gile, Armin Hansen, Edgar Payne, EangerIrving Couse, Nicolai Fechin, among many others.

Leading this sale is Joseph Raphael’s Tea in the Orchard from the John H. Garzoli Collection. Tea in the Orchard is lauded as ‘an example of true impressionism carried to its farthest point to be safe'”. A native of San Francisco, Raphael is considered to be among the best Western painters. Also included in this auction is August Gay’s A Fishing Boat, circa 1930. Known for portraying more avant-garde art, the painting is a wonderful depiction of that artistry. Gay was a Society of Six member, a group of artists who painted an exhibited together in and around Oakland, California in the 1910s and 1920s.

Additional highlights include two magnificent bronze statues by Charles M Russell illustrating traditional Western culture. The first is a beautiful depiction of a Blackfoot Indian on horseback carrying a medicine pipe and is estimated to reach $100,000 at auction. The second bronze statue by Russell was modeled in 1901 and is described as a Piegan scout of the Blackfoot raiding party. Summer Refreshments

Art has long influenced the everchanging opinions and has instilled values in our society.  Art began to take on a new look with new, brighter colors, emotional expressions, and experimentation with abstracts.  Artists sought out new approaches and ideas to art, both individually and collectively. Through abstract expressionism, modern art was created. Modern art brought about artists such as Monet and Picasso, Kandinsky and Kusama, and many more.  These great painters, sculptors, and creators went on to inspire the artisans of the 20th and 21st century and the contemporary art scene.

In keeping with modern art movements, contemporary art explores both personal and cultural identities of our time.  It is more globally influenced and culturally diverse. With featured artists such as Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, Tom Wesselmann, and others the Summer Refreshments auction presented by Bonhams is offering a look at all their creations.

A 2016 aluminum multiple titled Chance by Alex Katz, that shows three women in swimsuits in various stages with beach balls, is featured in the auction alongside a 1991 Tom Wesselmann screen-print of a colorful doodle depicting a blonde woman.  The auction also offers a vibrant Andy Warhol lithograph titled “Marilyn Invitation” published by Castelli Graphics for Andy Warhol: A Print Retrospective 1963-1981. Will Barnet’s 1976 “Summer Idyll” screen-print and lithograph on wove paper shows a woman lounging in a hammock surrounded by trees with a body of water in the background.  “Grammy” is a lithograph from artist Kenny Scharf also on wove paper that was created for the 39th Annual Grammy Awards.

With prices ranging from $600 to $60,000, a seasoned collector or a one-time buyer can find piece of modern and contemporary art they might admire. To view all twelve of the prints, visit Bonhams today.

The Glynn and Suzanne Crain Science Fiction Collection Signature Auction

The Glynn and Suzanne Crain Science Fiction Collection Signature Auction, offered by Heritage Auctions, focuses on three main areas of Science Fiction collectibles: Original cover art, pulp magazines, and books. Among the more valuable pieces in the collection is a painting by James Allen St. John which was used for the first edition, dust jacket of At the Earth’s Core in 1922. St. John was an early and highly impactful fantasy illustrator and it would be difficult to overstate the influence he had over later artists in this genre.

One of the books for sale that is sure to be highly sought after is a first edition, inscribed copy of Isaac Asimov’s I, Robot. This is a near-fine copy of a science-fiction classic, comprised of nine of his early “positronic brain” robot stories originally published 1940-1950. In a bit of a more contemporary vein, there is also a complete collection of J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter books, all first American editions, the first four of which are signed by the author. Though a more recent addition to the fantasy canon, this collection’s popularity has already attracted a lot of interest and it is likely to fetch well above its estimated price (early bidding has already doubled its valuation).
