Weathervanes have been considered both religious and cultural symbols over time, from their early origins in China to their adoption by Catholic churches as suitable tops for steeples. The second session of the American Furniture and Decorative Arts Auction presented by Skinner features several unusual copper weathervanes of different forms. Among them, a molded sheet copper and zinc weathervane stands out. It is shaped like a prancing horse with a zinc head and crimped tail. This antique from the 19th century was created by J. Howard & Company.
Many pieces of vintage furniture will be available in this auction; a painted poplar blanket chest is an especially interesting piece. It bears three drawers and a hinged lid, decorated with tulips and stars on a dark green background. The upcoming sale will include Pennsylvania Dutch folk art, miniature portraits, woodenware, sculptures, and more. Explore the collections of Carolyn and Tom Porter, Pam Boynton, August (Gus) Knapp, and other estates and register to bid online on Bidsquare.
