A set of original bomb plugs from “Little Boy,” the first atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima during World War II, is currently up for auction in the Conflicts of the 19th & 20th Centuries sale, an online auction hosted by Bonhams. “Little Boy” became the first nuclear weapon to be used in warfare when the Enola Gay, the U.S bomber plane, dropped it on the Japanese city of Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. The available bomb plugs come from the personal collection of Lieutenant Morris Jeppson, who served as the Weapons Test Officer on the Enola Gay during the mission.
This upcoming timed sale offers a variety of military and war relics, including a historic United States Coast Guard ensign and navigational map from the USS LCI(L)-86. This flag was flown during the landings in Normandy on June 6, 1944. Additional lots include a pair of road signs from an intersection outside Bastogne, Belgium. The double-sided road signs have blue and white enamel over metal, displaying the distance in kilometers from Bastogne to Luxembourg. Inspired by the likes of van Gogh and Cezanne, surrealist artist Joan Miró’s forte was the use of vibrant colors and playful shapes. From prints and wood reliefs to collage and sculpture, Miró experimented throughout his career. In 1974, Miró created an original tapestry for New York City’s World Trade Center, which was known for its abstract design and bright colors. The tapestry was one of the most expensive works of art lost during the September 11 attacks. ‘La Meneuse de Lune,’ a 1975 lithograph by Miró, is a part of ‘Exceptional Estates Auction’ by Blackwell Auctions.

A ceramicist, painter, and sculptor, Guerrino Tramonti entered the Italian art scene during the 1940s. His work ranged from ceramic tiles and glazed terracotta disks to Modernist porcelain and paintings. When Tramonti tired of his Eastern-inspired pottery, he changed mediums and continued developing Italian Modernism in fine art. The upcoming Modern Decorative Art + Design auction presented by Bonhams will feature Tramonti’s glazed porcelain work. Of interest are several large geometric vases glazed in earth tones. Popularly known as “The Shadowman,” Richard Hambleton started his career as a graffiti artist alongside a group of confidants and collaborators that included Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Kenny Scharf. His work includes series such as Mass Murder, Shadow Head Portraits, Marlboro Man, and Shadow Man. He is one of many artists being featured at Fine Art: Street & Contemporary Online Only Auction by Julien’s Auction with the piece ‘Shadow Head’. The item is Richard Hambleton’s 2017 portrait of Emmy-Award winning entertainer Eamonn McCrystal. Founded in Lancaster, Pennsylvania by John Hubley, the Hubley Manufacturing Company obtained the exclusive rights to produce toy versions of Harley-Davidson motorcycles in the late 1920s. By the 1930s, Hubley was the leading American manufacturer of realistic, cast-iron toy versions of the bikes. In 1930, the company cast a Harley-Davidson motorcycle with Popeye as its rider. Indian artist B. Prabha was known for her elongated figures of rural women, each painting executed in a single dominant color. Inspired by Amrita Sher-Gil, she entered the art world at a time when India had few women artists. Working mainly in oil, she was one of the most prolific and critically acclaimed artists of her generation. In the December Estates Auction presented by Material Culture, one of her works, Musician Ladies, will be available. Painted in 1984, the piece depicts three female musicians with Prabha’s signature. This auction will also include rugs, antiques, fine and decorative art, and other international pieces.

This December, Hindman Auctions will present a collection of artwork representing American and European culture.
