La Playa de Santa Fe Habana Cuba. Original humorous painting depicting a Cuban beach scene. Artist Signed.
Artist signed and dated left corner. Housed in a custom stacked frame. Title to bottom center. Haydee Scull was a twin born in Havana, Cuba in 1931. The Scull sisters collaborated to create elaborate and playful depictions of the activity in the streets of Cuba and Miami. They were best known for their humorous three-dimensional paintings using paper mache, wire, acrylic paint and various forms of different media. Stains to fabric on frame. Top right corner, visible accretion. Framed 38.75″H x 56.25″L. Painting 29.25″H x 47.5″L.

This shape featured in Collector’s Choice Review #2, August 1988 by The Rockwell Museum, in Red Aurene. The author, Robert L. Ivers, Director, Corporate Design at Corning Glass Works says: This vase is particularly successful as a mature statement of design in form, decoration, and function. It is well proportioned with a comfortable solid taper, yet has an overall feeling of lightness. Its subtle platform base is echoed by the diameter and proportion of the lip at the top of the vase. The Aurene leaf and feather decorative motifs executed in linear patterns over masses of color serve to define and reinforce the form and bring harmony to the design. The entire design of the vase anticipates its completion with stems of blooming flowers.
decorated brown Aurene vase of a different shape is shown in Collector’s Choice Review, No. 26, Nov.-Dec. 1991. The article by Thomas P. Dimitroff says: This extremely rare decorated brown Aurene vase was made about 1908. Although iridescent red and green Aurene objects like this were made until the late ‘teens, the browns were made only until about 1910. The Brown Aurene decoration of this vase is based on Alabaster.

From the collection of “Calcite Charlie” Charles Potter. The most glamorous and successful of the salesmen was Charles Potter, who came to the Steuben Glass Works in about 1906 or 1907 and continued to be Carder’s ace representative until about 1932. A tall, lithe man, Potter had a handsome aquiline nose, enhanced in his later years by an elegant pince-nez. With his expensively tailored clothes, courtly manners, and charming personality, he became known as the ‘man who kept Steuben running.’ So large were is sales of Calcite glass lamps and shades when these were introduced about 1915 that customers and competitors alike affectionately dubbed him ‘Calcite Charlie.’ P. 33 Gardner.
