Chavin Tembladera Spouted Vessel Transforming Shaman:
**Originally Listed At $7000**
Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, from Tembladera in the Jequetepeque Valley, ca. 1200 to 500 BCE. A rare tri-colored stirrup vessel depicting a shaman engaged in a trance-like state, most likely under the influence of the hallucinogenic effects of the San Pedro cactus whose branches contain a psychoactive substance that was used for traditional medicine and rituals. The shaman’s face is almost simian suggesting that the he may be undergoing a transformation. The figure sits with both hands upon raised knees, a pronounced hunchback (this physiognomic deformity was believed to be a sign that the individual was touched or chosen by the deities), and stares straight ahead with his white face, this color symbolic of the afterlife. A stirrup rises from his back with a tall cylindrical spout. The attractive surface of the piece is finished in red, brown, and white and skillfully stone polished, with the exception of the matte white face. Size: 5.625″ W x 11.375″ H (14.3 cm x 28.9 cm)
Chavin polychrome stirrups are extremely rare and are found only on the Jequetepeque River on its estuary called Cayalti, or in the Amazonas part of the Maranon River. The Chavin people lived in the northern Highland Andes, and their capital, Chavin de Huantar, is an UNESCO World Heritage Site. The artwork of Chavin represents the first widespread style in the Andes.

Huge Fossilized Rhinoceros Skull Chilotherium Species:
**Originally Listed At $6000**
Central Asia, China, Miocene, ca. 35 million years ago. A huge example of a fossilized rhinoceros skull, from the species Chilotherium andersoni, with fantastic preservation of the lower jaw which shows the large, tusk-like second incisors, each on either side of a wide diastema – the space/gap between the teeth. Wedged beneath the right maxilla is a small antelope or deer jaw, frozen there in the fossilization process. We see similar jumbling of fossils when a group of animals have been buried together in someplace like a mud pit or a flood, as at the Waco Mammoth National Monument in Texas, USA. This fellow likely perished in a similar event. The Chilotherium genus lived throughout Eurasia from the Miocene to the Pliocene. During this time period, grazing animals like horses, rhinoceroses, and hippos lived in vast grasslands, taking advantage of the new biome. This is an impressive skull from a rarely seen species. Size: 22″ W x 16.5″ H (55.9 cm x 41.9 cm)

Roman Lead Sarcophagus Panel Leaping Dolphins:
**Originally Listed At $8500**
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. A rare complete panel from a lead sarcophagus, its surface decorated with relief images encoded by its makers with deep meaning about how Romans memorialized their elite dead. The top and bottom are bordered by wide horizontal bands of repeated dense leaves. In the center, vines weave through each other forming broad X’s with large-petaled flowers at their centers. Above and below are repeated leaping dolphins. Size: 20.5″ W x 67.5″ H (52.1 cm x 171.4 cm) The panel is mounted on a piece of wood with a slightly smaller footprint.
Prior to the 2nd century, Romans cremated their dead; around that time, they became inspired by the Greek and Etruscan practice of using sarcophagi, and they began to make lead coffins. This trend spread rapidly throughout the Roman Empire. In the western part – where this panel likely came from, based on the leaf motif – sarcophagi were placed inside a mausoleum against a wall or in a niche. The leaves refer to actual garlands and flowers used to decorate tombs and altars. The dolphins, meanwhile, remind us of a powerful and common motif in Roman artwork. The Romans were largely a maritime empire, and the iconography of the sea included dolphins. Romans believed these animals carried souls to the Fortunate Isles, perhaps because they could pass through the air-breathing terrestrial world and into the watery depths that claimed so many Roman sailors’ lives. This symbol must have had personal significance for the deceased, who often ordered lead coffins to be made long before they died – the process of making them required such a long time that they could not be rushed!
