The upcoming February Eclectic Auction presented by Garth’s Auctioneers & Appraisers offers an array of furniture, firearms, stoneware, collectibles, and more. Available in the sale is a breech-loading rifle by J.H. Hall. In 1811, New England gunsmith John H. Hall patented his newly developed breech-loading rifle. Eight years later, he signed a contract with the U.S. War Department to produce 1,000 of the rifles. Hall’s firearms were ahead of their time and were adopted in large numbers by the army. The present example is an 1832 model with a walnut stock and leather flask.
A Victorian inlaid drop front desk is another key lot of the auction. This 19th-century ebonized mahogany desk includes four drawers, paneled ends, and bun feet. The drawer tops have floral motifs and line inlays. A framed print of Napoleon is also among the notable lots. The central image of the Emperor is surrounded by an outer border of smaller portraits. By the 1930s, Disney’s Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, and Clarabelle Cow were made into collectible dolls, puppets, and figurines. The characters were featured on lunch boxes, handkerchiefs, and backpacks as well. Whitley’s Auctioneers, in their upcoming No Reserve Discovery Auction, will present a selection of Disneyana figurines, paintings, and collectibles. Rising to the top of the sale is a limited edition Mickey & Minnie Mouse serigraph by Ron Dias. The animator was hired by Disney Studios in 1956 after winning a nationwide stamp contest.
A pair of Native American warrior dolls are also highlighted. Made by Kirby Justin Ramos, a woman and an older man stand next to each other. The dolls rest against wooden poles with sculpted clay faces and natural hair. Others lot of interest include a large vase by Doulton Burslem. One of the most recognized luxury jewelry designs from Van Cleef & Arpels is the Alhambra. The talismanic design of the Alhambra was inspired by four-leaf clovers and debuted in 1968. In the 1970s, the design became fashionable among celebrities who wore layers of Alhambra necklaces with different gemstones. The upcoming Incredible Russian Gold Diamond Jewelry Sale, offered by Allure Antique Auction Company, will feature a long Alhambra necklace made of 18-karat gold and diamonds.
Also available in this auction is a Cartier diamond and emerald bracelet resembling a panther. Among Cartier’s many designs, among the most recognized is the ‘panthere.’ Tiffany & Co.’s Schlumberger bracelet is another leading lot. Swiss artist Marc Gabriel Charles Gleyre emphasized classical and biblical subjects in his works. Gleyre helped create the juste-milieu compromise style of painting. Additionally, he taught a number of aspiring artists who later became prominent, including Claude Monet. The upcoming Antiques & Decorative Arts Winter Auction offered by Los Angeles Antiques will include an oil painting after the style of Gleyre, titled Les illusions Perdues or Le Soir.
Another item available in the event is a piece styled after Diego Velázquez. The available portrait shows Don Gaspar de Guzmán on top of a horse, his body angled toward a battle. Guzmán’s head, however, turns back to show a glimpse of his face. Guzmán was a powerful figure during the reign of Philip IV, bearing a major impact on Spanish politics and culture. The works of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec combined fine art with the advertising industry. Regarded as one of the leaders of Post-Impressionism, Toulouse-Lautrec designed posters for the Moulin Rouge. One of his paintings, from his Elles series, will be featured in the upcoming Fine & Decorative Art Monthly Online Auction offered by Heritage Auctions. The piece, titled Femme au Lit, translates to Woman in Bed. The color lithograph is printed on Van Gelder paper.
Another key lot of the auction is a pair of Sèvres porcelain urns from 1900. The gilt bronze porcelains are topped with removable dome covers. Shown on the urns are landscape paintings with couples. The Galaxie was Ford’s leading full-size car from 1959 until 1974, rivaling Chevrolet’s Impala. The car was given the name “Galaxie” as a marketing effort to generate interest in the Space Race, started a few years prior. The two-door coupe is black with a red convertible soft-top.
Also showcased is a Louis Féraud fur coat. Féraud was a well-known French fashion designer and artist until his death in 1999. This Canadian lynx fur coat fits women sizes 8-10 and features soft natural brown and beige colors. A 19th-century Louis Philippe dresser is also highlighted. This four-drawer wooden dresser rests on bun feet and stands 33 inches tall. During the Art Deco period of the 1920s, Baume & Mercier introduced square-and-rectangular-case watches, known as ‘Hamptons.’ Their name was taken from the Hampton neighborhoods in New York. The tank-style Hampton face has seven diamonds on either side.

The taler was the common currency for the Holy Roman Empire until its demise in 1806. Highlighted in this auction is an 1866 taler. This coin features white centers and a dark blue rim. A 1742 gold ducat coin is also showcased. Gold ducat coins were used for trade in Europe until the 20th century. A luxury French brand specializing in lifestyle accessories, leather, jewelry, and watches, Hermès named its famous handbag the “Birkin” after the English actress Jane Birkin. When the actress met Jean-Louis Dumas, the son of Robert Dumas-Hermès, she mentioned how unsatisfactory her bag was for daily use. Subsequently, Dumas invited her to France and they co-designed the bag. Lucchesi has won several awards and commissions, completing works for the Bank of America and Italy’s Amerigo Vespucci bridge. He often depicts contemplative female figures in his works.
