Double Session Estate and Collectible Auction

Bohemian Czech Oxblood Art Glass Splatter Vase

Portrait painter John Singer Sargent is best known for his charcoal sketches. The Boston Public Library holds the majority of Sargent’s sketches of pagan gods, mostly in the form of his Triumph of Religion wall murals. Although Sargent considered these murals to be his most important work, he could not complete them due to the religious controversies arising from his art. Bruneau & Co. Auctioneers will present Sargent’s charcoal study of Moloch—the god of material possessions—in the upcoming Double Session Estate and Collectible Auction.

Also featured is a limited edition porcelain sculpture by Neo-Pop artist Jeff Koons. The sculpture depicts a cobalt-blue balloon dog, a permanent depiction of a temporary carnival attraction. A collection of pre-World War II tin toys is also available in the sale. The invention of lithography and machines used for stamping sheet metal led to the development of these tin lithograph toys. Majolica earthenware, silverware, furniture, and coins will be on offer as well. Bidders can explore the full catalog and register to bid online on Bidsquare.

Fine and Decorative Arts

A PAIR OF LARGE 19TH CENTURY CHINESE PORCELAIN VASES

The upcoming Fine and Decorative Arts auction, offered by Dirk Soulis Auctions, presents the work of over 50 years of collection. A single owner gathered the available lots from local areas such as Kansas City and St. Joseph, as well as overseas while working in China. One of the available lots in the sale is a set of 32 prints illustrating The Fable of Cupid and Psyche by the “Master of the Die.” The identity of this artist remains unknown, but history notes that he was an Italian engraver from the early to mid-16th century who signed his prints with a small die mark. His work, including the prints offered here, was executed in the style of Raphael.

Also up for bid is a large Gustave Lévy gilded bronze clock. Lévy was a Parisian bronze sculptor and manufacturer in the mid-19th century. His work won bronze medals in the 1862 World Exhibition, as well as a gold medal in the 1878 World Exhibition. The clock on offer is in working order and is listed in good condition. Other highlighted lots include an Erté signed drawing, several antique badges, a set of purple Chinese porcelain beasts, a collection of three Japanese Meiji shrines, and several chandeliers. Online Only Auction | February 21st

Malcolm Furlow | Indians

Sculptor Martha Pettigrew’s Too Many Cabbages…Too Few Melons is one of the highlighted lots in the upcoming Online Only Auction, offered by Altermann. Pettigrew counts Native women of the Southwestern United States among her artistic inspirations. Her pieces often depict women as gatherers, which can be seen in this piece: a woman rests her arm on a large bag of cabbages and looks off into the distance. Like Pettigrew’s Too Many Cabbages, many of this auction’s lots represent the Southwestern United States and Native Americans.

While painter Elias Rivera was known for his Abstract Expressionist pieces early in his career, a move to Santa Fe, New Mexico encouraged him to produce paintings speaking to the traditions and everyday life of people in the region. Two of these paintings, Tapestry of Souls and Visions of Solola II, are available in this auction. Both pieces are also examples of Rivera’s preference to paint groups of people, especially those that are unaware of his presence.

Rounding out the featured lots is Scott Rogers’ bronze sculpture titled The Pendleton Girls. In the early 20th century, the Pendleton Drug Company sponsored several professional cowgirls to compete in rodeo events across America. The Pendleton Girls, as they came to be known, were trained in many different events, from calf-roping to dodging bulls. Rogers’ sculpture pays homage to these women. Those interested in any of these lots can register to bid on Bidsquare.
