Old Master Paintings and 19th Century Art

Tommaso di Credi (attivo a Firenze, fine secolo XV - inizi secolo XVI) - Madonna with Child

Finarte’s Old Master Paintings and 19th Century Art sale will highlight the work of Italian Renaissance painter Tommaso di Credi. Alternately known as the “Master of the Santo Spirito Sacra Conversazione” or simply Tommaso, the artist was active between 1490 and 1510 in Florence. Available in this auction is Tommaso’s interpretation of the Madonna and Child, a common religious theme in his work. The Child is shown gazing at a toddler dressed in rags, offering a gesture of blessing with one hand.

More contemporary works available in this event include a 1907 unfinished oil study by Roman artist and film director Giulio Aristide Sartorio. The piece was practice for a large series titled The Poem of Human Life, commissioned for the Central Hall of the Venice Biennale. Its style aimed to bridge the gap between Greek-Latin and Nordic cultures. Costantino Barbella’s 1877 Harmony sculpture on offer shows two women in conversation, while his 1894 study piece for The Cherry or At the Market depicts a roughly carved peasant resting a bucket at her feet. John Richardson: A Scholar Collects Day Two

After Andy Warhol (1928-1987)- John Richardson

Day two of this Stair event brings to auction more pieces from the collection of Sir John Richardson, the late art historian. This includes a study of two male nudes and a Greek athlete by Swiss-born artist Johann Heinrich Füssli. Forced to flee Switzerland as a political refugee, Füssli eventually found himself studying in Rome. The work of Renaissance artists such as Michelangelo inspired Füssli to explore nude figures, of which this piece is an example.

Also featured are two untitled latex and rubber pieces by Alexander Hoda (lots 283 and 284). The works combine elements that are equal parts human, animal, and industrial into one dark mass. With pieces like these, Hoda aims to tap into the viewer’s interest in the macabre. “I don’t want my work to be seen as vulgar or offensive,” says the artist, “but I don’t think any art should be viewed in terms of its beauty either.”

Bidders will also find a painting of Sir John Richardson based on a photograph and painting Andy Warhol made of the scholar. Richardson gifted the original piece to the Tate Britain in 2017. Those interested in these pieces can register to bid on Bidsquare, or continue reading on Auction Daily

18th C. European Brass Mortar and Pestle

Iranian-American Abstract artist Masoud Yasami does not associate himself with any specific artistic group. Rather, his multi-dimensional artworks often experiment with space, color, illusion, balance, and chaos. As the artist states, “For many years I have dealt with gravitational force as the drama in my work; for example creating the illusion of forcing a rod to bend or a sphere to fall out of its position of balance and harmony.” An oil painting from Yasami is among the leading lots of the upcoming Antiquities | Asian | Ethnographic Art event, presented by Artemis Gallery. Titled Composition with an Open Door, the piece shows cloudy skies, a flowing waterfall, two overlapping rods, a fern leaf’s silhouette, and a lily.

Other notable lots include a painting titled Horses, Swensen Ranch, Oahu, Hawaii by William Draper. Though best known for his portraits, including one depicting John F. Kennedy, Draper was inclined toward landscapes due to his great interest in nature. Bidders can also consider an Egyptian canopic box in this auction. Hand-carved from cedar wood, the box features five mummiform figures. The lid has a polychrome Ba bird with a giltwood sun disk. Chinese Enameled Porcelain Covered Jar

A gu vessel is a Chinese container that was used for wine or ritual offerings during the Shang and Zhou dynasties. The tall and slim vessels have a flared and tapered base and a wider mouth. Collector’s Auction

William Moorcroft Art Nouveau Flambe Vase, Claremont

Active in the late 1890s, William Moorcroft was an English potter associated with the Art Nouveau style. Moorcroft pioneered a new Florian Ware design, hand-decorated and outlined in trailed slip using a technique known as tube lining. Throughout his career, Moorcroft centered his work on Florian Ware, which won him popularity and a gold medal at the St. Louis International Exhibition in 1904. For over a decade, this pottery design produced many different patterns that were hailed for their aesthetics. The upcoming Collector’s Auction, presented by Whitley’s Auctioneers, will offer two Moorcroft flambé vases.

The auction also features several pieces of silverware and sculpture. A Wedgwood Fairyland Lustre vase is particularly highlighted. A British company, Wedgwood has a long history of creating porcelain adorned with Neoclassical and antique motifs. The available vase, from Wedgwood’s Fairyland Lustre collection, was designed by Daisy Makeig-Jones. The center of the vase is engraved with scenes of elves, boats, and mushrooms. Timepieces, sculptures, manuscripts, and dolls will be available in this auction as well. Explore the full listings and register to bid online on Bidsquare.

Modern Design

Michael Coffey, Early El Morro desk and chair

The upcoming auction, presented by Rago, features several furniture and decorative art pieces influenced by Modern design. Among these is Johnny Swing’s furniture piece titled Fortune Cookie. Furniture made from nickels, quarters, half-dollars, or dollar coins has become the hallmark of Swing’s work. “Assembled together to form the furniture they become part of the play in swirls, lines, and patterns,” the artist wrote on his website.

A 1962 coffee table will be available from American designer George Nakashima. The furniture features a single slab top with sap grain detail. An important figure of the American craft movement, Nakashima was influenced by the designs of Le Corbusier and Mies van der Rohe of the International Style. He believed that wood must be shaped in a way that displays “its true potential.” Another key lot is glasswork by Toots Zynsky, who introduced the filet de verre method of layering multicolored glass threads onto a flat, heat-resistant plate. This method made the artist widely known in the glasswork industry. View each of the lots and register to bid on Bidsquare.
