Web Auction 86 – Ancient Silver, Ivory and Coral, Pens, Icons and Objects of Russian
Sep 15, 2020 09:30 EDTThe upcoming Ancient Silver, Ivory and Coral, Pens, Icons, and Objects of Russian auction, presented by Bertolami Fine Art, features a 19th-century German ivory oliphant. Between the 16th and 18th centuries, oliphants or hunting horns were often used to produce a resonant sound. Made from elephant tusks, their ivory surfaces were covered in carvings of birds, fruit, wolves, and warriors. The instruments were hung from chains around the necks of men. Also highlighted among the 425 lots is a Chinese coral sculpture from the early 20th century. It features Shoulao, the God of Longevity. The figure can be seen holding a peach and a walking stick at either side.
The auction also features several examples of silverware and vases. An English sterling silver soup tureen from the 19th century will appear in the sale. The available oval-shaped tureen comes with a cover and features loop handles and a twisted rope border. Furniture, jewelry, fine art, and sterling silver will also be included in this catalog.
