Two 19th-century Morgan dollar coins headline Key Date Coins’ upcoming auction. The first is an 1886-O Morgan dollar coin. Unlike other mintages, it is unclear why the 1886-O is so scarce. The New Orleans Mint struck nearly 11 million of these coins, but Silver Dollars & Trade Dollars of the United States estimates that only 350,000 of them at most are in collections. The example available in this auction never reached circulation and earned a grade of ms64.
The second Morgan dollar coin is from 1893. The New Orleans Mint struck fewer of these coins than any other Morgan-designed silver dollar, making its scarcity clearer than the 1886. For a brief period in the late 1940s and early 1950s, the Treasury Building slowly sold these coins off at face value. Now, Silver Dollars & Trade Dollars of the United States estimates only about 300 of them exist at an ms64 grade or above. This particular coin comes to auction at an ms64 grade, the same as the 1886-O.
Beyond the Morgan dollar coins, bidders will also find an 1858 Double Eagle $20 coin. The 1858 is an early example of the Double Eagle coin, with no motto presented on the backside and only “Twenty D.” printed to display its worth. Those interested in this or any other lot can register to bid on Bidsquare.
Randall Tysinger Antiques will present a selection of vintage furniture in a timed April auction. An Italian painted and gilt cabinet is among the key lots. Its top set of doors highlights carved columns with gilded fruit and flowers. On the bottom, the piece includes hand-painted flower and ribbon decorations. Dark blue curtains, tucked behind each door, conceal the cabinet’s contents.
A Swedish marble top gueridon table will also be available in this sale. Created in 17th-century France, gueridon tables often feature a pedestal formed by a mythological or human figure. They typically include a round top to display a lamp or vase. The available gueridon table sports four-petal flower accents along the sides. Its dark gray marble top has a slightly beveled edge.
Bidders interested in French and English vintage furniture will find several examples in the auction catalog. A French Louis XVI-style canapé with laurel, ribbon, and floral accents will be presented in this auction. Designed to comfortably seat three people, canapés became popular in France before crossing the Atlantic under the influence of Thomas Chippendale. An English mahogany oval table, several wood dining tables, and various sideboards are on offer as well. Visit Bidsquare for the complete listings and to place a bid.
Silverware and other estate treasures chosen personally by Mr. Jonathan Akiba will be available in Akiba Antiques’ upcoming spring auction. A Georg Jensen centerpiece in the Grape pattern is a leading lot. The large (11” wide) bowl sits on top of a sterling silver foot, also decorated with grapevines. The nature-inspired Scandinavian design by Georg Jensen honors his legacy as an innovator. Jensen is often counted among the leading silversmiths of the 19th and 20th centuries. He regularly blurred the lines between artistry and craftsmanship in his works.
Silver pieces from S. Kirk and Sons will be featured in the auction catalog as well. American silversmith Samuel Kirk founded the company and became famous for introducing repoussé or embossing to American silversmithing. An antique S. Kirk & Sons sterling silver repoussé tea set is available for sale. The six-piece set includes a kettle, a coffee pot, a teapot, a cream jug, a pitcher, and a sugar urn. Floral designs cover each piece.
The auction will also present Italian marble sculptures by Antonio Frilli. Dancing Faun, a hand-carved Carrara marble sculpture, depicts a lean, muscular man with curly hair and a raised arm joyfully playing cymbals. While the original Dancing Faun was sculpted during the Roman period, Frilli made this replica during the 19th century. Best known for his Western landscape paintings, Edgar Payne (1883 – 1947) was an American painter, muralist, and explorer. In 1916, when Payne was commissioned by the Santa Fe Railroad, he got the opportunity to visit Canyon de Chelly. The upcoming Bonhams sale features Canyon Walls by Edgar Payne, which details sunlight and shadows on the cliffs of Canyon de Chelly. The viewer’s eyes are drawn toward large rock formations beside a dark vanishing point. Near the bottom of the painting, Navajo figures ride through a parched riverbed.
Among the key highlights of the sale is Along the River Bed by William Wendt (1865 – 1946), a German-born American landscape painter. Known as the “Dean” of Southern California landscape painters, Wendt adopted the French Impressionist style. He found Southern California to be the perfect setting to translate his ideas about color and light. Another oil on canvas by Wendt, In the Shadow of the Grove, features vivid brush strokes and a multi-layered color scheme. In 1907, the Union League Club of Chicago purchased In the Shadow of the Grove. The Club displayed the piece for decades before it headed to auction. Luxury jewelry brand Cartier often makes custom jewelry for its clients based on their taste and individual design preferences. These Monture Cartier pieces use gemstones from customers. The GIA-certified platinum ring features a round-cut diamond. A sapphire, onyx, and emerald-set Cartier Tahitian pearl brooch is also among the notable lots.
The sale will highlight an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak titanium watch. Emmanuel Guiet designed this chronograph watch in 1993. Though Peter Rabbit is likely the best-known character of author and illustrator Beatrix Potter, fans of her work may also know her tale of Mr. Jeremy Fisher, a frog that lives at the edge of a pond in England’s Lake District. Examples of these figurines will appear in the upcoming Storybook Collectibles Auction, offered by Lion and Unicorn. Among the leading lots is a prototype figurine of Mr. Jeremy Fisher standing and welcoming his friend Isaac Newton (the newt), as illustrated by Potter. This prototype is one of few with both characters placed side by side.
Beyond the Beatrix Potter characters, the auction includes more than 80 figurines from the Bunnykins collection, three items from Beswick Collectibles, and more than 40 Disney figurines. One of the Disney lots is a Mickey Mouse figure holding his sword from the film Brave Little Taylor (1938). “I Let ‘em Have it!” is printed on the base. This figurine was created in 1993 as a Members Only sculpture. View any of these lots and register to bid on Lion and Unicorn.
Pook and Pook’s Bud & Judy Newman Collection sale highlights an oil painting by Edward Willis Redfield, titled The South Window. Edward Willis Redfield began his journey as a painter in the 1890s. However, it was only after the turn of the 20th century that the artist embraced the Impressionist style, which eventually defined his artistic career. Between 1905 and 1906, Redfield started using gestural brushstrokes and layers of vibrant colors. The available framed piece shows a woman gazing out of the window. The room is painted in warm tones.
Daniel Garber’s oil painting, titled The Mary Maxwell House (Milk Wagon), will be available as well. In the 1920s, artist Daniel Garber emerged as one of the leaders of the New Hope School. Inspired by Impressionism, the American painter often captured landscape scenes of the New Hope area. Helmuth Stone Gallery’s forthcoming Important Fine Art, Chinese Antiques, & Jewelry sale includes over 400 lots from diverse categories. Included in the catalog is a drypoint etching by Rembrandt. Best known for his biblical scenes and portraitures, Rembrandt is recognized as one of the most prominent painters in European history. Many of his works explore the balance between light and shade. This piece from 1650 depicts a landscape scene with trees, farm buildings, and a tower. The sky is drawn in etched lines to indicate dark clouds.
Also highlighted in the sale is a René Lalique red amber glass vase created in 1921. Followed by a successful career in jewelry making, René Lalique entered the pottery industry at the beginning of the 20th century. The artist’s works took inspiration from Japanese art as well as the French countryside. This particular vase is decorated with archers aiming their bows at a flock of flying eagles. Collectors will have an opportunity to own a piece by the internationally recognized artist in Larsen Art Auction‘s upcoming spring sale. Double White Tulips by George Hitchcock shows well-organized rows of white and red tulips framed by a windmill in the background.
Collectors can also consider Birger Sandzén’s Autumn Harmony. Sandzén made the opposite trip of George Hitchcock, emigrating from Europe to America. He would eventually teach at Bethany College in Kansas and become an influential painter in the region. Autumn Harmony depicts the Smoky Hill River, which flows from eastern Colorado to Junction City, Kansas, where it joins the Kansas River. In the painting, trees present a wide spectrum of changing autumnal leaves, from bright green to fiery red.
Rounding out the top lots is Dan Ostermiller’s A Friend Indeed, a bronze sculpture of two rabbits showing each other affection. This piece was one of only six produced in a limited edition in 1985. View each of the lots and register to bid on Bidsquare.
