Intricate patterns of fish, flora, and fauna decorate its surface. To view the full catalog or to place a bid, visit Bidsquare.
A Ferrari 275 GTB/6C Long Nose is a key highlight in Mecum Auctions’ upcoming sale. After the success of Ferrari’s 250 GT Lusso series, Ferrari launched the 275 GTB in 1964. It was the company’s last dual-purpose sports car. The car was the only road car to feature a five-speed transaxle which offers improved weight distribution and an independent rear suspension. The 275 GTB was built by Scaglietti and designed by Pininfarina.
A Ford Shelby Cobra also leads the sale. The car debuted in 2004 in Detriot when Ford joined forces with Shelby. It is known for its modern take on classic sports cars. Featuring four valves per cylinder, a 6.4L/605 hp Ford Advanced Powertrain V-10 engine powers the car. A Delahaye Type 135 Competition Court Teardrop Coupe is also available in the auction. It is one of six Figoni short-chassis coupes built in 1936. Powered by a low-mounted engine, this particular chassis includes a racing-style fuel tank. A famous gunfight at the O.K. Corral started on October 26th, 1881. Virgil Earp, brother to Morgan and Wyatt Earp, led the fight with Doc Holliday. After the gunfight, a group of outlaws retaliated and maimed Virgil’s right arm. That didn’t keep him out of the crime-fighting business, as Earp went on to start a private detective agency. A handwritten letter by Virgil Earp on agency letterhead is currently up for bid in The Early West auction from the collection of Jim and Theresa Earle, offered by Bonhams.
There are over 260 available lots in the sale, including a selection of noteworthy firearms. One available gun is Pat Garrett’s Colt single-action revolver that he used to kill Billy the Kid. Though they had once been friends, Pat Garret eventually tracked Billy the Kid and shot him in the chest on July 14th, 1881. This famed gun will appear at public auction for the first time in this event. Other notable firearms include Wild Bill Hickok’s Springfield Trapdoor rifle that was buried by his side in Deadwood; Bat Masterson’s Colt single-action revolver that he custom ordered from the Opera House Saloon in Dodge City; and a Smith & Wesson Schofield revolver possibly used by Jesse James. Berlin-native artist George Grosz rose to prominence while documenting the excesses of Germany’s Weimar Republic during the 1920s. He fled to New York soon after, though, understanding the danger of the emerging Nazi Party. “I carefully and deliberately destroyed a part of my past,” Grosz recounted. Headlining Barridoff Galleries‘ upcoming international fine art sale is a painting documenting George Grosz’s impressions of New York, downtown Manhattan in particular. The artist emphasizes towering high rises, bright lights, and confident passersby.
Collectors of 20th-century art will also find a piece by Will Barnet. The artist is known for his haunting depictions of dreamlike scenes. In this piece, a bird stands completely straight on a perch just above a fog of darkness. The eyes of both the bird and the person gazing at it are hidden, further mystifying the scene. Meanwhile, several works representing different stages of Walt Kuhn’s career are also on offer. That includes The Tumbler, an example of Kuhn’s late-career pivot toward portraits of clowns and circus performers. Walt Kuhn depicts these subjects in an empowering light, making viewers question the stigma associated with such careers. Register to bid and view each of the lots on Bidsquare.
Sublime designs and Surrealist artists take the lead in Akiba Antiques‘ upcoming August auction. A stainless steel sculpture by Ernest Trova is among the auction’s top lots. Its mechanical appendages can be adjusted with a key. It also comes with an artist book. Trova was a leading figure in the American Surrealist and Pop Art scene in the 1960s and 70s. His Falling Man sculpture series presents a standardized representation of modern humanity.
Among decorative art, a Jaeger LeCoultre Atmos Classique clock is notable. Jean-Léon Reutter invented the clock before the LeCoultre & Cie Manufacture fully developed it in 1928. The 20th-century clock has a rhodium-plated frame, perpetual movement, one barrel, and 15 jewels. A slight change in the ambient temperature is sufficient to power its mechanism for two days. A bronze Art Nouveau vase signed by the Viennese artist Heinrich Babka is also available in the sale. The vase depicts a nude figure talking to a pair of young boys. The upcoming auction includes more than 600 lots of sculptures, furniture, and antiques. Find the full catalog on LiveAuctioneers.
Doyle will continue its Special Collections series this August with an auction of fine art, furniture, porcelain, and silver from an Upper East Side private collection. Among the leading lots is a giltwood pier mirror from the 1750s. With conjoined C- and S-scrolls around the frame, the mirror references the style of English cabinetmaker John Linnell. Cresting the mirror is a ho-ho bird with outstretched wings. Modeled after the long-necked Japanese phoenix, ho-ho birds started appearing on Georgian and Rococo furniture in the 18th century. Designers treated them as symbols of good luck that would add interest to otherwise plain pieces of furniture.
Other notable furniture items in the auction catalog include a burr and figured walnut bureau bookcase that dates back to the early 1700s. The bureau features a velvet-lined writing surface, etched mirror plates, and several long drawers for storage. Wood engravings from American artist Howard Cook, George III-style sterling silver articles, and a selection of China Trade School artworks are also notable. Visit Doyle’s website for the catalog and to register to bid.
One oil painting from Angel Otero will be presented in the upcoming ArtCrush 2021: Art Auction to Benefit the Aspen Art Museum, offered by Sotheby’s. The work, titled Blue Pineapple, combines bold colors and scribbled lines to create an abstract composition. Internationally recognized artist Angel Otero is considered one of the most influential expressionist artists of today. He pioneered the deformation technique, which involves painting on glass and scraping the dried oil paint from the surface. The paint is then assembled on an empty canvas to form a multi-layered composition. “In this way, the paint itself emerges as a crucial conceptual component, mobilizing ideas of chance, conveyance, and aesthetic vernacular,” the lot essay for Blue Pineapple further explains.
The upcoming auction features over 40 pieces of fine art. An oil painting by Barbara Kasten, titled Progression Fourteen, is one of the featured lots. Kasten is best known for her video projections and paintings that offer a sense of movement. Her modernist style is “subversively political” and often invites the viewer to challenge their perceptions. To view the complete auction catalog and register to bid online, visit Sotheby’s.

Andy Warhol’s Fish is also available. The screenprint displays three gray-colored fish aligned in a column. Guild Hall East Hampton is a 1980 screenprint by Roy Lichtenstein and is on offer as well. Interested bidders can view the full catalog or place a bid on Bonhams.
In 1659, English settlers arrived on the island of Nantucket. They hoped to earn a living through farming and shepherding. They soon noticed that every autumn, whales surrounded the island until spring. From 1690 until around 1840, Nantucket was known as the top whaling port in America. However, as Nantucket’s population dwindled in the 19th century, whaling also decreased. Rafael Osona Auctions will offer a nostalgic view of the Nantucket whaling community with its upcoming Whaling and Marine Memorabilia auction.
Highlighted in the sale is a Nantucket whalebone, cherry wood, and whale ivory birdcage made by Joseph Clapp around 1870. The birdcage is constructed with a pegged, mortise, and tenon dome top, a cherry wood frame, whalebone dowels, and a hinged access door. Each top corner features a whale ivory ball-in-cup decoration.
