Angel Otero ‘Blue Pineapple’ Painting Comes Under Sotheby’s Hammer
Jul 26, 2021 10:00 EDT - Aug 06, 2021 12:00 EDTOne oil painting from Angel Otero will be presented in the upcoming ArtCrush 2021: Art Auction to Benefit the Aspen Art Museum, offered by Sotheby’s. The work, titled Blue Pineapple, combines bold colors and scribbled lines to create an abstract composition. Internationally recognized artist Angel Otero is considered one of the most influential expressionist artists of today. He pioneered the deformation technique, which involves painting on glass and scraping the dried oil paint from the surface. The paint is then assembled on an empty canvas to form a multi-layered composition. “In this way, the paint itself emerges as a crucial conceptual component, mobilizing ideas of chance, conveyance, and aesthetic vernacular,” the lot essay for Blue Pineapple further explains.
The upcoming auction features over 40 pieces of fine art. An oil painting by Barbara Kasten, titled Progression Fourteen, is one of the featured lots. Kasten is best known for her video projections and paintings that offer a sense of movement. Her modernist style is “subversively political” and often invites the viewer to challenge their perceptions. To view the complete auction catalog and register to bid online, visit Sotheby’s.
