500 Gallery Features Works Attributed to Georgia O’Keeffe, Joan Mitchell, Marc Chagall, and More

The latest event from 500 Gallery, the August Pop Modern Mix, is a wide-reaching sale of paintings, prints, multiples, and other fine artworks. Leading the catalog is a vibrant flower painting attributed to Georgia O’Keeffe. Red Poppy shows the flower in close detail, with a ruffled black center and lush red-orange petals. The auction house notes that this example is possibly a study for a larger work. O’Keeffe was a pioneering modernist best known for her vivid depictions of flowers, plants, shells, and Southwestern scenery. Poppies were a recurring theme in her paintings. Another key artist with attributed work in the catalog is Joan Mitchell. She was one of the few women Abstract Expressionists to attract fame and recognition during her lifetime. The offered abstract work is an untitled oil on canvas from circa 1969. Drips, daubs, and splashes of yellow, red, and blue paint cover the canvas. 

An untitled, dreamlike composition attributed to Marc Chagall can also be considered. A mixed media on paper piece, this work contains an inscription to the lower right and is dominated by shades of pink and lavender. Like many of Chagall’s works, this example contains numerous symbols and mysterious imagery. The Eiffel Tower is visible in the background of the scene.
