Attributed Abstract Modernist Works Come to Sale with 500 Gallery’s Hidden Masterpieces Fine Art Auction

Philip Guston, Attributed Title: Smoking Head with Plant

Philip Guston is described as one of the most powerful and promising American painters of the last century. His works reflected varied influences, including figuration inspired by the Renaissance and Abstract Expressionism. He often explored antisemitism, racism, and fascism in cartoonish representations using popular culture symbols such as cigarettes and light bulbs. The upcoming Hidden Masterpieces Fine Art auction, presented by 500 Gallery, will feature a noteworthy oil on canvas painting attributed to Guston. Smoking Head with Plant features his characteristic, often-repeated cartoonish portrait of an ovoid-shaped face smoking a cigarette. Another significant oil on canvas in the catalog is an abstract landscape attributed to Arthur Garfield Dove. The painting has obvious Asian influence with calligraphic lines accentuating vigor. Dove usually made watercolor sketches such as these outdoors and then converted them into oil paintings in his studio. The American Modernist was known for creating abstract landscapes with unusual media combinations.

A gouache and graphite on paper composition credited to Sonia Delaunay also leads the listings. The Ukrainian-French artist subscribed to the Orphism art movement known for its geometric shapes and robust colors. The unframed artwork is signed and dated 1968. The Art of Sport and More From Guyette and Deeter

Extremely rare and important decorative bald eagle, Ward Brothers, Crisfield, Maryland.

The two brothers Lem and Steve Ward began their careers as barbers in Crisfield, Maryland. When it became clear that they had a talent for carving bird decoys, the two switched full time to creating hand-made hunting decoys and continued doing so through the 1950s. Several examples of their works can be found in the upcoming Decoy & Sporting Art Sale, offered by Guyette and Deeter. With the material and manufacturing progress of the 1960s, however, demand for hand-made decoys began to decline, and the brothers turned to decorative, non-waterfowl carvings of birds such as grouse and flickers. In 1967, Steve Ward carved a lone, monumental eagle that Lem Ward painted. This piece is a featured item in the auction.

Beyond decoys and decorative birds there are also several cigar store trade signs by several artists, vintage bullfighting posters from Spain, a horsehair upholstered sofa from the 1930s by Frits Hinningsen, books and magazines related to decoys and hunting, and more. There are also several fine art paintings in the sale by artists such as Theodore Waddell, Tom Lieber, Jim Foote, and Seth Steward. Joseph Henry Sharp’s Portrait of Taos Pueblo Hunter and Fritz Scholder’s Post-Modernist Artworks Highlight Hindman’s Upcoming Sale

Joseph Henry Sharp (American, 1859-1953) Title: Where the Deer Come

Painter Joseph Henry Sharp was a founding member of the Taos Society of Artists. Sharp was the foremost European-American artist to visit Taos, New Mexico. President Theodore Roosevelt once commissioned him to paint portraits of 200 Native American warriors. A striking oil on board by the artist portraying a Taos Native American is a key highlight of the upcoming auction from Hindman. Where the Deer Come depicts the Taos Canyon floor where a Taos Pueblo hunter, most probably Hunting Son or Elkfoot, is waiting for his quarry one fall afternoon. The place is located miles away from Sharp’s home and studio. During autumn season, the artist would often visit the canyon to spend the day fishing and painting such images.

The Western & Contemporary Native American Art sale also features four of Fritz Scholder’s artworks. Two oil on canvas paintings, Indian From the Plains and Friends, characterize his post-modern sensibilities and the influence of Pop Art on his works. Horse and Rider, an acrylic on canvas, depicts a subdued portrait of an anthropomorphized form. Another notable acrylic work, titled Red, is a somber composition exemplifying Scholder’s strong paint application skills. To view the complete catalog and register to bid online, visit Hindman.

Potter & Potter’s October Magic Auction Features Robert-Houdin’s Glass Column Mystery Clock and Dr. Hofzinser’s Any-Card Box

[hofzinser] Hofzinser Any-card Called For Card Rising Box. ...

Long before Harry Houdini had everyone under his spell, there was Jean-Eugène Robert-Houdin. He was a French watchmaker, magician, and illusionist, the father of the modern style of conjuring who inspired the American Houdini. The upcoming Salon De Magie; The Collection of Ken Klosterman Part III auction, presented by Potter & Potter Auctions, starts with a Robert-Houdin glass column mystery clock. It is an iconic clock from the inventive mind of the most prominent magician of the 19th century. These clocks were instant successes when they were first introduced in the late 1830s. The available mystery clock was made by Robert-Houdin in 1850 in Paris. The clock has two mysteries – a glass clock face and a glass tube supporting the face. It is five inches in diameter with a round brass bezel, to which a single arrow-shaped ormolu hand is attached. The numbers are Roman numerals painted in reverse. The clock stands on a clear glass tube with an ebonized wooden base and four feet.

The magic of the auction continues with a Hofzinser any-card called for card rising box. Johann Nepomuk Hofzinser (1806 – 1875) was an Austrian-Hungarian magician and illusionist known by his stage name Dr. Hofzinser. The available leather-covered brass case tooled in gilt is the one designed by Hofzinser. He would place a pack of piquet cards inside this box before calling a spectator on stage to name any card in the pack. Then the called card would rise from the slot to the top of the box. The case contains a complex clockwork device that creates the effect. This is a rare piece, one of only two manufactured by Charles Kalish in 1976. Find the listed items and more on Potter & Potter Auctions, and register to place a bid.
