A 25-Million-Dollar Abstract Painting by Willem de Kooning Leads Sotheby’s Sale of the David M. Solinger Collection

Willem De Kooning

A 25-million-dollar collage by Willem De Kooning (1904 – 1997) leads Sotheby’s upcoming The David M. Solinger Collection Evening Auction. The Dutch-born American artist was considered to be one of the greatest post-war Abstract Expressionist painters. Early in his career, de Kooning only painted men before he was encouraged to paint women as well. His approach revolutionized the 1940s into abstraction. De Kooning’s paintings had abstract anthropomorphic, feminine elements, yet all the figures were spaced out. The available irrepressibly vibrant collage was executed in 1950.

Sotheby’s upcoming auction is an extraordinary assembly of 20th century masterworks. Joan Miró, Pablo Picasso, Alberto Giacometti, Jean Dubuffet, Alexander Calder, Maria Helena Vieira da Silva, and William Baziotes are some of the featured artists. Hans Peter Wilhelm Arp or Jean Arp (1886 – 1966) was a German-French sculptor, painter, and poet. He was known as a Dadaist and an abstract artist. Fruit méchant, a unique pink limestone, life-sized sculpture by Arp is available in the upcoming auction. Executed in 1936, reduced to its essential form, Fruit méchant exemplifies Arp’s ability to give life to objects. Find the listed items and more on Sotheby’s and register to place a bid.

Brunk Auctions to Offer Henri Martin’s Painting and Decorative Arts on November 11

Henri Jean Guillaume Martin Impressionist Painting

French painter Henri-Jean Guillaume Martin was renowned for his Neo-Impressionist paintings. Martin often explored historical and poetic themes in his paintings. His art involved bold usage of colors accompanied by expressive, short brushstrokes. The upcoming Premier Auction-Session I sale presented by Brunk Auctions features one of Martin’s artworks. Femme Cousant sous un Marronnier (Woman Sewing Under a Chestnut Tree) is an idyllic Impressionist painting authenticated by Cyrille Martin.

Another highlight in this sale is a fine Irish George II carved Mahogany games table. The 17th-century table looks classy with a solid dovetailed drawer and brass pull. While the knee of the cabriole legs is lavishly carved with intricate drawings, the feet of the furniture piece resemble lion paws. A selection of figurines, rugs, collectibles, masks, and furniture are also available at the sale. View the full catalog of this and other online auctions and register to bid online on Bidsquare.

From Natural Iridescent Ammonites to NASA Guidebooks, Hindman’s Upcoming Auction Offers Natural Wonders of Our World

A Large Iridescent Ammonite Fossil (Placenticeras costatum)

Ammonite fossils belonged to the Jurassic period when dinosaurs roamed the earth. Ammonites were squid-like marine creatures, found in oceans, that eventually died 66 million years ago. Their shells fossilized over time. A large 16.25 inches (41.3 cm) tall, natural, iridescent ammonite fossil (Placenticeras costatum) is a leading lot in Hindman’s upcoming A Cabinet of Curiosities auction of ancient art and natural history. This exemplary ammonite fossil was recovered in Canada. It is an intensely vibrant ammonite that took millennia to become an iridescent gemstone. Its colors shift with the light from vivid reds to emerald greens to flickers of orange and gold, purple, and brilliant blue.

Hapi is depicted as an androgynous figure with large drooping breasts and a prominent belly, often associated with fertility and illustrated as having both male and female bodily attributes. A sandstone relief of Hapi from the Ptolemaic Period is available in this auction. The god wears a crown of papyrus and lotus in this relief. Other notable lots in the sale include a 4.6-billion-year-old meteorite that fell to Earth, a NASA guidebook from 1966, and more. James Turrell’s Ethereal Hologram 10 Leads the Way at Autumn Modern & Contemporary Fine Art Auction

James Turrell (b. 1943)

Hologram #10, an electrified, mixed-media hologram and glass construction by James Turrell, is one of the leading lots in John Moran Auctioneers’ upcoming Autumn Modern & Contemporary Fine Art sale. Hologram #10 is an homage to abstract painting masters like Mark Rothko. A field of blue light emanates from backlit geometric shapes, evoking an expansive, ethereal ambiance reminiscent of Rothko’s works. Turrell’s version is sculptural. Each shape floats weightlessly, and the radiating light coming from them creates multi-dimensionality. Turrell executed the available work in 2008.

Known as the founding mother of feminist art, Judy Chicago just wanted to be taken as seriously as her male counterparts when she began her career in the 1950s. Born Judith Sylvia Cohen in Chicago, the artist later changed her name to Judy Chicago and accepted the fact that her works were different from those of her male contemporaries. Her work addresses tough subjects such as the Holocaust, toxic masculinity, birth, extinction, and more. Chicago’s love of color and abstraction can be seen in the available Transformation, a 1973 sprayed acrylic and felt-tip pen piece. Find the listed items and more online auctions on Bidsquare.
