Art for Tibet’s 10th Benefit Auction Features the Work of Ai Weiwei, Shepard Fairey, and Cey AdamsOct 19, 2022 08:00 EDT - Nov 03, 2022 21:00 EDT
The 10th annual Art for Tibet auction will take place this November. Proceeds from the sale support Students for a Free Tibet (SFT), a non-profit network campaigining for Tibetan freedom, human rights, and political independence. This year’s auction features the work of honorary committee members Ai Weiwei, Shepard Fairey, and Cey Adams. It showcases over 75 artworks from renowned international artists, as well as contemporary Tibetan artists such as Sonam Dolma and Pema Rinzin. Among the top lots is Ai Weiwei’s Hanger. The stainless steel sculpture recalls the artist’s 81-day detainment in 2011, during which he was allowed a set of plastic hangers to dry his clothes.
Also notable is Ana Maria Velasco’s Jaguar and Roses, an acrylic painting that the artist completed in 2022. Like many of Velasco’s works, this piece highlights the biodiversity of the La Sierra Madre de Santa Marta mountain range in northern Colombia. A spotted jaguar gazes intently out at the viewer in the available piece. The mountain range is faintly visible in the background. Other key lots in the sale celebrate Tibet’s history and vibrant culture, including Tsherin Sherpa’s Himalayan Spirits and prints by Danny Clinch from various Tibetan Freedom Concerts of the 1990s.
