Nov 01, 2022 10:00 PDT
The land of rich culture and history, Taos has long been an inspiration for artists. American artist Oscar Edmund Berninghaus (1874 – 1952), best known for his Western landscape and Native American paintings, was highly influenced by Taos. Bonhams will soon bring Berninghaus’ famous artwork The Ancient Forest of the Indians to auction. The surreal canvas is rendered in bright, reflective colors including pinks and blues. It features two Native American figures with their horses in a forest setting.
Another notable work from the sale is a painting by Walter Ufer (1876 – 1936). Titled The Water Women, the painting depicts a group of women involved in chores. The brushstrokes are precise and convey Ufer’s competency. Styles represented in this auction catalog range from portraits and beautiful landscapes to Impressionism and Realism. Other items of interest in the sale include An Idle Dreamer by Frank Tenney Johnson (1874 – 1939), Chollas Against the Mountains by Maynard Dixon (1875 – 1946), Hosteen Begay at the Canyon by Ray Swanson (1937 – 2004), and a selection of art figurines. Visit Bonhams to view the complete catalog and place a bid.
