One of the leading lots from the sale is an artwork by Richard Estes titled D-Train. Rendered in 1988, this work is a color screenprint on museum board. Estes was born in 1932 in Kewanee, Illinois. Potter & Potter Auctions will offer The Ricky Jay Collection Part III this August. Chung Ling Soo’s 1912 half-sheet color stone lithograph, A Gift From the Gods, is among the featured lots. Soo was born in New York as William E. Robinson (1861 – 1918). He created a stage persona of a Chinese magician for his performances. He worked behind the scenes for Kellar and Herrmann before finding success and fame as a magician. During his last performance on stage at London’s Wood Green Empire in 1918, he was shot when his bullet-catching feat went wrong and died shortly after. In the offered lithograph, Soo stands on a huge hand, descending to Earth from a flurry of storm clouds. Of the dozens of posters designed for Soo’s use, this is perhaps the best-known and was later used as the title of a work regarding the many images used to advertise his magic shows.
A rare book with illustrations of Tuccaro’s acrobatics will be offered in this Ricky Jay Collection Part III event. Arcangelo Tuccaro (1535 – 1602) was an Italian gymnastics instructor and tightrope walker. This work is widely recognized as one of the first-tier illustrated books of the Renaissance. The Trois Dialogues offers substantial details on theatrical dance during the late 16th century, and it represents the first printed work on floor exercises. The first Dialogue deals with Gymnastic exercises. The second contains several beautiful speeches about the jump called by the Ancients Cubistic. In the Third, there is ample discussion of the exercises that man can do. This book was published in 1599 by Claude de Monstr’oeil. It has a modern tan binding signed by Sangorski & Sutcliffe. Gilbert Davis Munger (1837 – 1903) was one of the most prolific American landscape painters of the 19th century. Munger, a largely self-trained artist, was born in Madison, Wisconsin. He pursued art at a young age. At 14, Munger worked as an engraver at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. A Munger painting titled Mount Shasta (with Indians and Encampment) is available in the upcoming California & Western Art Online auction, offered by Bonhams. This framed canvas is signed ‘Gilbert Munger’ on the lower left of the canvas. It depicts the magnificent Mount Shasta from the west and highlights Native Americans on horseback. One highlight of Mecum Auctions’ Monterey 2024 automobile auction is a 1969 Ford GT40 Lightweight. The Ford GT40 is one of the most important American racing cars, and it was built and designed to win the world’s most prestigious endurance race, the 24 Hours of Le Mans. In 1966, with Henry Ford II attending Le Mans, the MkII GT40 provided Ford with the first overall Le Mans victory for an American manufacturer. The Ford GT40 won four consecutive times from 1966 to 1969, run by John Wyer in 1968 and 1969. In addition, Ford also won four FIA international titles with the GT40. This model utilized 4.7L (289 CI) Ford V-8 engines that were enlarged to 4.9 liters with special alloy Gurney-Weslake cylinder heads. A total of only ten lightweight competition GT40s were built, and the example offered in this sale is one of them. It comes with the original body, chassis, engine, and transaxle.
Also available is a 1930 Packard 734 Speedster Boattail Runabout. Powering this Speedster is the original 384/145 HP L-head inline eight-cylinder engine, equipped with a Detroit Lubricator dual-throat carburetor, high-compression cylinder head, and correct finned manifolds. Other mechanical features include the current and visually identical 1931-vintage four-speed manual transmission and correct Speedster-type finned drum brakes. Desirable accessories include a radiator stone shield, a “Daphne at the Well” radiator mascot, a Haartz canvas top, and a restored convertible top frame.
