Danish-born American maritime artist Antonio Nicolo Gasparo Jacobsen (1850 – 1921) arrived in the United States in August 1873. He settled across the Hudson River from Manhattan and New York Harbor, its port filled with ships from America and worldwide. Jacobsen got his start painting pictures of ships on safes, and as his reputation grew, he was asked to do portraits of ships by their owners, captains, and crew members, with many of his works selling for five dollars. Jacobsen was chosen both for the accuracy of his work and his low fee and was known as the “Audubon of Steam Vessels.” Jacobsen painted more than 6,000 portraits of sail and steam vessels over the course of his career.
The Marine Auction also offers a large 19th-century Narwhal tusk from the Arctic Circle. It measures six feet high and nine inches wide. It has a fine patina coat. The Arctic Circle is the most northern polar circle. The narwhal (Monodon monoceros) is a toothed whale native to the Arctic Circle. The narwhal has a stocky body with a prominent melon, reduced flippers, a shallow dorsal ridge, and mottled brown-and-white coloration. Bonhams will present its Modern & Contemporary Art Online sale this August. Over 170 lots of fine art by the likes of Reuven Rubin and Armand Guillaumin will go under the hammer. A key highlight is an oil on canvas painting titled Peace Offering by Reuven Rubin. A Romanian-born Jewish painter, Rubin served as Israel’s first ambassador to Romania. He was considered a pioneer in the Israeli art world. The artist often depicted Biblical landscapes of his hometown and mythological subjects. The Gone With the Wind lamp, also called a hurricane or chamber lamp, is known for its double-lampshade structure with both the top and bottom having identical color. The eponymous lampshade became popular after it was used in the set design of the movie, Gone With the Wind. Born in Vitebsk, Belarus, Marc Chagall enjoyed a successful career in the 20th century as a Modernist artist. Chagall, whose real name was Moyshe Segal, was born into a modest Jewish family. He received his first artistic training at the art school in his native Belarus. He shifted to Paris in 1923 following World War I. A 1947 etching of the legend of Saint George and the Dragon by Salvador Dali is a key highlight of the upcoming sale by Toomey & Co. According to the legend, the saint arrived in a village where a tyrannical monster would extort tribute from its inhabitants on a regular basis. When their livestock and trinkets were exhausted, the villagers began offering humans. This went on until the princess was selected as the next offering. Saint George rescued the princess and slayed the dragon. In Christianity, George of Lydda is considered a martyred soldier and venerated as a saint, although the narrative has diverse pre-Christian origins. Published by the Print Club of Cleveland, it is signed and dated to lower right ‘Salvador Dalí 1947’. The etching belongs to the edition of 250, printed by Charles S. White at the studio of Stanley William Hayter (New York).

Among the highlights is an antique parcel-gilt bronze Chinese censer probably belonging to the late Ming or Qing dynasty. With two looped handles, the piece stands 4.75 inches high and weighs approximately 383.6 grams. It includes intricate decorations along the sides with scholar’s objects such as incense burners and brush pots. According to the auction house, this style is similar to works by Hu Wenming and his workshop. Hu Wenming (1573 – 1620) was one of the most accomplished metalworkers in Chinese history.
