Akiba Antiques’ Year-End Sale Offers Romolo Grassi Sculpture and Rare Copy of Joyce’s Ulysses

Romolo Grassi 18k Gold & Diamond Hunter Sculpture

The son of an Italian goldsmith, Romolo Grassi received extensive training in jewelry from an early age. He later took those skills and applied them to the creation of objets d’art and sculpture. Grassi’s art reflects this background—many of his works are made of precious metals and expertly-cut jewels. Akiba Antiques’ end-of-year auction, The Final Countdown, will particularly highlight an 18-karat gold and diamond hunter sculpture by Romolo Grassi. The piece depicts a lean, muscular hunter aiming a spear at an animal’s skull near the edge of a cliff. Grassi used gold to draw attention to the most important elements of the scene, including the spear and the animal’s delicate horns. The piece dates back to the 1960s. Other finely carved objets d’art in this auction include a large Chinese carved coral figural group from the early 20th century. Five figures emerge from the scene, each holding auspicious objects while wearing benevolent expressions.

The catalog also includes a rare 1935 copy of James Joyce’s Ulysses with illustrations by Henri Matisse. That year, an American publisher asked Matisse to create several illustrations of the story for a special book club edition. However, it appears that Matisse never read the novel, instead creating illustrations evoking Homer’s epic poem Ulysses. The available copy includes an introduction by English scholar Stuart Gilbert and was signed by Matisse. Additional lots of interest include an antique Austrian silver, enamel, and ebonized wood clock. Hand-painted figural scenes decorate the piece. Cherubs play among the clouds on the clock’s face, and courtship imagery appears along the base and top. View the complete catalog and register to bid on LiveAuctioneers

Dane Fine Art Presents Prints, Lithographs by Roy Lichtenstein and Joan Miró This December

Roy Lichtenstein Title: The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum

Pop artist Roy Lichtenstein was a significant figure in the 1960s American art scene. His works were influenced by popular comic strips and advertising styles. Lichtenstein’s The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, an original serigraph on BFK Rives paper, is a key highlight of the upcoming Dane Fine Art sale. In this circular composition, the artist showed a limited range of colors to portray a Roman column, a bridge, and a man in front of buildings. With a palette including yellow, green, and red, Lichtenstein used black lines and Ben-Day dots to depict two-dimensional objects. Two original lithographs by Joan Miró from Le lézard aux plumes d’or also lead the listings. Both works portray colorful dots and shapes in an artistic language that is characteristic of Miró’s style. The artist’s abstract art decodes ideas into colors and shapes that are deceptively simple.

The sale also features Itzchak Tarkay’s Lady in Red, an original cast bronze sculpture. Tarkay was considered a leading figure in the contemporary figurative movement. He was known for his perceptive artworks depicting women socialites as important subjects. To view the complete catalog and register to bid online, visit Bidsquare and browse other online auctions.

Drawing of Queen Elizabeth II by Andy Warhol, Fine Art by Tully Filmus Highlights Upcoming New Years Eve Auction

Andy Warhol, Queen Elizabeth II Drawing

The New Years Eve Auction, hosted by Nest Egg Auctions, features a drawing of the late Queen Elizabeth II by American Pop artist Andy Warhol. Warhol excelled in the Pop Art movement, which brought the symbols from popular culture into the realm of fine art. The piece belongs to 1985’s Reigning Queens Collection, which includes 16 serigraphs by Warhol. The artist created four portraits of Queen Elizabeth II for this series. Warhol converted the Queen’s 1966 postage stamp portrait by John Hedgecoe into his unique style, which depicts the monarch in profile. The Queen and her jewels are depicted in a simplistic manner by Warhol using strong red crayon lines on brown artist’s paper. Squiggles are used to provide the shading for the hair, giving the two-dimensional image additional depth.

The forthcoming auction will also feature Jewish Wedding by American Jewish painter Tully Filmus. This oil on canvas painting from the mid-20th century shows an Eastern European Jewish wedding ritual. In the painting, village ladies are dressed in vibrant dresses as they dance around the bride, who is seated in the middle and is covered.
