The Amusing Style Selections from the Collection of Pavel Zoubok and Paul A. Baglio Jr.

In an interview, beginning the 1998 documentary “Divine Trash”, filmmaker John Waters is asked what he wants to say in his movies. “I’m not trying to say anything,” Waters responds, “I’m just trying to give people a good time…and give them a little shock value for their money’s worth.” Entertainment becomes culture and culture, many times, becomes art, regardless of its original intentions. The meeting point of entertainment and art is the focus of The Amusing Style, an auction presented by Wright. Lots in this auction come from the personal collection of art dealer Pavel Zoubok and husband Paul A. Baglio Jr.

Many pieces are by artists who regularly transform lowbrow culture into high art. This includes a set of three plates by John Waters, “The Girls”. Like his films, Waters’s “The Girls” focuses on something both commercial and somewhat grotesque, in this case, three off-brand-Barbie heads. The piece is number 237 from an edition of only 300 and is signed by John Waters himself. One of the most iconic actors in John Waters’s films is the drag queen Divine. Divine is also represented in this auction with the vintage poster for the play “The Neon Woman”.

Also included in this auction is a piece by Andy Warhol, “Untitled (Lips)”. Warhol was, of course, the most notable member of the Pop Art movement. The untitled lips come from a sketchbook Warhol worked in during 1975. Wright notes that the piece was basically unknown until an exhibition in 2015. Representing another counter-cultural movement (this time Dadaism) in this auction is Man Ray with “Untitled (Portrait of Juliet Man Ray)”. The portrait’s subject, Juliet, was Man Ray’s wife. Impressionist & Modern Art Online

Art critic Louis Leroy originally coined the term “Impressionists” not to compliment the artists, but to insult them. However, what Leroy saw as the movement’s downfall, artists such as Renoir, Luce, and Fantin-Latour saw as its strength: the ability to capture the emotional impression of a moment instead of just its objective truth. The Impressionist & Modern Art Online auction offered by Sotheby’s encompasses not only fine art by the Impressionists, but also work from later generations influenced by the movement.

Among the most notable lots is a fragment from Renoir’s “Femme Se Coiffant”. The piece is considered noteworthy in the artist’s progression, and it is among the pieces copied for the forthcoming Renoir Digital Catalogue Raisonné. Impressionist Henri Fantin-Latour was known for his work with still life and group portraits. An example of the latter is the piece “Trois Baigneuses”, which is available in this auction. Work by notable Post-Impressionists in this auction include Henri Matisse’s “Nu Debout”. Matisse was an artist with many phases, from being one of les fauves (French for “the wild beasts”) to collages. This piece was made in 1930 when the artist was experimenting with simpler forms. Those interested can view and bid on any lot in the auction on Sotheby’s website until bidding closes the morning of July 24th.

Art, Design and Collectibles Part 2 – No Reserve

RARE ROYAL DOULTON ANIMAL FIGURE WALL PLAQUE, FOX HEAD

It is 1920, and you’ve decided to watch a racy picture show at the penny arcades. You put your money in and are treated to a flipbook-style show of a fully-clothed woman waking up. Like many lots in the Art, Design, and Collectibles (Part 2) auction presented by Whitley’s, this fully-operational penny arcade offers a glimpse into another time period. While technologies have advanced and definitions of racy have evolved, taking a look at the spectacle of previous generations gives us a better understanding of history.

This auction from Whitley’s is the second half of their Art, Design and Collectibles series, the first part taking place on July 13th. Among the most notable lots in part two is an early 20th-century wooden phone. The piece, made in 1907, includes a button that, in its time, would have connected you to an operator. Another piece with historical significance is the Royal Doulton wall plaque in the shape of a fox. Royal Doulton was an English ceramic manufacturing company that opened in 1815. The brand holds cultural significance to this day, including being prominently featured in Mary Poppins Returns (2018). Whitley’s notes that the fox, originally produced in 1930, is uncommon and few are known to exist.

Another notable piece in this auction is a hand-operated Roller Organ made in the United States in 1890. This model was the standard for organs in the United States from the 1880s to 1920s. Those interested in any of these pieces can view every lot and register to bid on Bidsquare.

Tribal and Ethnographic Weaponry

Handsome, yet deadly is how the lots in Cowan’s Tribal and Ethnographic Weaponry and Art sale, would be described. Scarce and sharp, the artifacts representing culture and art from around the world, constitute the auction. Objects, seen and read only in fiction, come to life. Like an attractive curved silver Saudi Jambiya (knife), war clubs from Solomon Islands and even an Africa Mali mask, with elongated faces, rectangular noses, and horns.

A wide selection of Indonesian Keris, made distinct by their beautiful wavy blades and fine handles are among the featured lots. An early 19th century Indian silver dagger with intricate Koftgari decoration throughout, as well as several Nepali kukuri (Khukuri), used during historic wars by the brave Gurkhas- celebrate skillful artisans. Each khukuri comes fitted with beautiful silver and colorful mounts. To go through the tribal experience, register and bid at Cowan’s.
