Fine Classical Chinese Paintings & Calligraphy

Fine Classical Chinese Paintings & Calligraphy/AuctionDaily

Sotheby’s showcases the craft of traditional Chinese landscape paintings and calligraphy in this upcoming auction. The 71-lot event features work from some of the most popular artists in Chinese history, such as Zhang Daqian and Dong Qichang.

Qichang was a calligrapher and artist from the late Ming Dynasty. In his landscape paintings, he preferred to depict locations, as he was known to change details if it helped his expression. A landscape and calligraphy piece on gold paper of his has an estimated value of over $100,000.

Born over three hundred years later than Qichang, Zhang Daqian was considered one of the most important Chinese artists of the 20th Century. Like Qichang, he eventually transitioned away from traditional depictions of landscapes and moved towards Expressionism. Daqian’s Ode to Red Cliff After Kuncan is available in this auction. Above the beautiful landscape are two seals by the artist and a poem.

Qichang and Daqian’s pieces are among the most noteworthy in this auction. However, the lot with the highest estimated value is Zhu Yunming’s Ode to the Goddess of the Luo River. A scholar from the Ming Dynasty, Zhu was known for questioning traditional values. Contemporaries believed his eccentricities informed his “wild-cursive” style, which is on display in this piece. Those interested in any of these pieces can register to bid on Sotheby’s website.

Fine & Decorative Art Online Auction

Fine & Decorative Art Online Auction/AuctionDaily

The monthly Fine & Decorative Auction for September, offered by Heritage Online is anchored by a wide variety of fine art, but also includes many chairs, bowls, vases and other ornamental and functional items. Of the works, creating a good deal of early interest and bidding, is a breathtaking landscape by Robert William Wood (American, 1889-1979) titled Mountain Majesty. Wood was born in England, but emigrated to the United States and became well-known in the 1950s with the sale of millions of color reproductions of his work. He was active in the art colonies of San Antonio, Texas in the 1930s, Monterey, California in the 1940s and Laguna Beach in the 1950s.

Another piece garnering early interest by buyers is Metaphysical Horse by Mihail Chemiakin. Chemiakin is a Russian painter, stage designer, sculptor and publisher. Though he studied at the school of art at the Il’ya Repin Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture in Leningrad, he was expelled in 1961 for failing to conform to Socialist norms of realism.

One of the more unusual lots is a framed fossil of a gar, which is a very primitive fish, readily identified by their ganoid scales. The Green River Lagerstätte gar is not common compared to the numerous other species of fossil fish found in the same Wyoming locality. Its elongated snout and conical teeth indicate a predatory diet likely consisting of other fish. This large specimen measures 39 inches (99 cm) from tip to tail and is in a mottled matrix joined by two smaller fossil fish. Framed and ready to be installed on your wall.

Converso Modern

Karl Benjamin/auctionDaily

To be able to recognize major art pieces and historic objects, which are otherwise overlooked, is a quality. Lawrence Converso is someone who possesses such an instinctive trait. Converso Modern by Wright Auctions is a look into his stellar collection of modern designs and objects, as every piece has its unique value. For instance, George Nakashima’s long chair is an elegant piece made out of American black walnut and hickory. Nakashima is known as one of the leading innovators of the 20th century and the father of the American craft movement. Nakashima once said, “Our wood pieces are at times studied for years before a decision is made as to its use” proving each piece’s worth.

Similarly, one cannot admire enough, the detailed carving of Jan de Swart and the story behind his piece, The Ark. The wooden ship is carved out of jelutong (a Malaysian tree with pale lightweight timber) showcasing the intricate architectural design and the mastery of the maker’s technical skills. Not only that, the collection is the definition of variety. It combines class with style, with Karl Benjamin’s geometric abstractions which is an oil on canvas and Ford Motor company’s thunderbird Karbombzd by Kenny Scharf, respectively. Ranging from $700 – $50,000, the items are well within the budget for collectors. Visit Wright Auctions to bid and for information.

Asian Works of Art

Asian Works of Art/AuctionDaily

Asian art is a broad category, one that crosses multiple regions, numerous nations, and more than a few decorative labels. Sampling from these cultures is no easy task, but is well-handled by Skinner in the upcoming Asian Works of Art auction. Over 550 lots are set to cross the auction block, ranging in estimates from $200 to $100,000. This broad price range allows for an even wider selection of available items.

A pair of Huanghuali yoke-back armchairs rise to the top of this auction’s catalog for good reason. These chairs were made in China in the 17th century, elegant with fluid lines and intricate floral carvings set in relief. Another standout lot is a pair of bright green vessels, carved with traditional shapes in celadon stone. These beautiful cylinders give a strong introduction to this auction’s large selection of carvings and jade work.

Beyond the ancient pieces dating to the later Chinese dynasties, some modern works from Japan and Malaysia are also included. A woven panel from the early 20th century depicts five playful boys surrounding a large vase—a vase that has evidently been broken. The creativity of this woven scene is mirrored in a watercolor love scene painted by Tay Chee Toh, which blows a breath of abstraction into the traditional Eastern forms. Gallery Auction

Roy Lichtenstein "Sweet Dreams Baby!" lithograph poster/Auctiondaily

Many onlookers will observe in wonder, as works of art available at Gallery Auction by Michaan’s Auction allow one to understand the power of expression. Countless items can stir up interest in the auction like the Andy Warhol film cell from the Beatles Yellow Submarine and trove of fantastic original B movie posters!

While rare opportunities befall all Beatles fans, art enthusiasts will be just as pleased to take home paintings by revolutionary artists such as Roy Lichtenstein. His art was inclined towards portraying a kind of anti-sensibility that pervades society. Capturing the warmth of the sun, in a painting, is Seldon Conner Gile’s depiction of a farm through his thick impasto brushstrokes.

A fine example of pouring colors and fluid painting amidst this vast collection of 824 lots is a landscape of New York by Ernest Lawson. The landscape employs the extent of bold, yet harmonious colors to create compositions of a serene atmosphere. View the full catalog on Michaan’s Auction.
