The American and European Art Auction offered by Hindman features notable work by artists such as Henry Moret, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Camille Pissarro, Kees Van Dongen, Jean Dufy, Jasper Francis Cropsey, Childe Hassam, Fern Isabel Coppedge, and Thomas Hart Benton. Several lots are from the collection of Maker’s Mark Distillery and were originally commissioned as part of a 1945 – 1947 advertising campaign for Hiram Walker Distilleries of Windsor, Canada, and Peoria, Illinois.
The paintings, including Thomas Hart Benton’s “Whiskey Going into the Rackhouse to Age or Whiskey Barrel,” also appeared later in Life Magazine. During his career, Benton professed himself an “enemy of modernism,” and his representational work became known as Regionalism. His Whiskey Barrels painting was in storage for many years and will likely see the highest bids in the sale, estimated between US $600,000 and $800,000. Other paintings by lesser-known yet talented artists from the same collection are relative bargains with opening bids as low as $1,000.
Though the enemy of modernism may be featured in the sale, an abundance of the remaining works would likely be classified as at least friendly, including works by French Impressionists Henry Moret and Pierre-Auguste Renoir, as well as Danish-French Neo-Impressionist Camille Pissarro.
Beyond the whiskey barrel and European artists, there are also many fine works by Americans. Like the evocative “Winter Landscape” by American Impressionist Fern Isabel Coppedge. Coppedge was well known as a landscape artist who often painted nearby villages and farms of Bucks County blanketed with snow. View all these lots and register to bid on Bidsquare
Hans Wilsdorf, the founder of Rolex once said, “It is not with low prices-but on the contrary-it is with the improved quality we not only can hold the market but improve it.” Since its inception, Rolex has proved that they can create timepieces that define luxury, quality, and trends. Luxury jewelry from brands such as Piaget Polo, Chanel, and Van Cleef & Arpels is featured alongside classic and vintage items.

The precious stones are also featured in an antique cushion-cut star pendant, intricate in its details and fashionable as ever. Of particular interest in this sale is a collection of wristwatches for both men and women. One of the controversies that surrounded Indian painter M.F. Husain was his nude paintings of Hindu gods. In the Fine, Folk, Outsider, & Ethnographic Art Auction, presented by Material Culture, several pieces exemplify Husain’s embrace of the taboo. This includes his watercolor painting “Man and Yellow Woman with Snake in Pot”. A naked man and woman stand ankle-deep in water. The painting’s only two colors, a warm yellow and red, focus the viewer’s eyes on the naked woman and the implied intercourse. The Fine, Folk, Outsider, & Ethnographic Art auction’s lots bring together fine and decorative art from numerous countries and noteworthy artists such as Pablo Picasso.
Forbes referred to M.F. Hussain as the Picasso of India, a title that stuck for the rest of his life. It is fitting, then, that this auction also has several pieces by Pablo Picasso himself. Among which is “Le Couvent” or “The Convent”. The piece was produced in 1910, just as Picasso and Georges Braque were beginning the Cubist movement. “Le Couvent” displays the geometric qualities associated with Cubism. Bidders should note that the piece is unframed and not signed by Picasso.
The piece with the highest estimated value in this auction is Ram Kumar’s untitled abstract composition. Kumar was a colleague of M.F. Hussain and was considered to be one of the first Indian abstract artists. The yellow and red colors are disrupted by the jagged brown lines in the middle of the composition. Those interested in any of these lots can register to bid and view each lot on Bidsquare.
