Illustration Art Signature Auction

Illustration Art Signature Auction

Regarded as an iconic fantasy illustrator, J. Allen St. John left an enduring mark on fictional and heroic illustration. With his classical, dynamic compositions and elegant figures, his paintings are noted for their sense of whimsy and adventure. One of St. John’s paintings from 1922 depicts a gruesome battle; the piece would go on to be featured on the dust jacket of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ The Chessmen of Mars. This painting and many others will be presented in the upcoming Illustration Art Signature Auction offered by Heritage Auctions.

Available paintings from Frank R. Paul and Virgil Finlay recall each artist’s distinct style. An imaginative illustration titled The Ark of the Covenant by Frank R. Paul also served as a book cover before crossing the auction block in this sale. Highlights also include paintings by Frank Frazetta, Gil Elvgren and Arthur Saron Sarnoff. Remix: American, English & Continental Silver

Rago

Silver has long been used as currency, jewelry, décor, and the subject of fascination. The upcoming Remix: American, English & Continental Silver auction presented by Rago will feature this enduring material, especially examining its role at the dinner table. Silverwork from around the world is highlighted, including lots from China, India, Europe, the United States, and beyond.

Silver table settings and decorative pieces from Tiffany & Co. are of particular interest, including works of varying styles and artistic movements. One of the brand’s sterling silver wine coolers stands out with its playful cherubs and miniature grave vines. A statement piece made near the end of the 19th century, the wine cooler contrasts with Tiffany & Co.’s more modern designs, including a minimalistic but dimpled carafe.

The precious metal looks different throughout this auction but shares a common lean towards elegance. A pair of Danish candelabras embraces modernism, while detailed tea sets from the East demonstrate the flexibility of silver. Its uses in the decorative context are also acknowledged in this auction—a sterling silver model of a Rubik’s cube celebrates the toy’s fifteenth anniversary. Historic Autographs-Currency-Political-Americana-Militaria-Guns

Early American History Auctions

The Historic Autographs, Currency, and Gun auction, offered by Early American History Auctions, brings together documents from American figures such as President Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis, as well as weaponry with historical significance.

The lot with the highest estimated value is a signed personal check from Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln signed the check-in 1857, four years before his presidency. The check is taken from his account with Springfield Marine & Fire Insurance Company. Lincoln had an account with the company, who are now a part of JPMorgan Chase, from 1853 until his assassination.

Another lot with ties to the American Civil War is a letter from Provisional Confederate President Jefferson Davis. When the South succeeded from the United States, Davis served as its president throughout its entire independence. In the letter, Davis informs someone on the latest regarding William L. Yancey. Davis previously sent Yancey to Europe to secure European recognition of the Confederacy as its own country. In this letter and other correspondences, Jefferson Davis signs his name “Jeffn Davis”.

Those interested in historic weapons should also consider a Revolutionary War-era British fusil. Early American History Auctions notes that fusils like this were made specifically for officers. Those looking for a more affordable historical gun should also consider a flintlock service pistol from the Napoleonic Wars. The lot’s condition report notes that the pistol is in good working order. The Collector: English & European 18th & 19th Century Furniture, Ceramics, Silver & Works of Art

Edouard Léon Cortès (French, 1882-1969)/AuctionDaily

The beautiful French town Aubusson is more popular for its one particular product rather than the countryside picturesque that it offers. With over 6 centuries of the rich history of producing large and beautiful tapestries, Aubusson tapestry is a prominent example of the French culture. A pair of fine and massive French Aubusson tapestries, ‘le depart de la chasse au Faucon’ and ‘le Retour de la chasse’ is offered in The Collector sale. The auction highlights grouping of 18th and 19th-century silver and ceramics alongside English and European period furniture.

Minton produced a limited number of vases using the Pâte-Sur-Pâte technique. It is a French term that means paste on paste. To mark Minton’s bicentenary in 1992, the firm used the technique to produce a limited number of vases. A pair of pate-sur-pate dusky rose vases are reproductions of early pieces by Alboin Birks. The elongated shield-shape vases symbolize wisdom and love through the finely painted maidens.

Other standouts include Sevres and Meissen porcelain, Buccellati and Georg Jensen silver, 18th and 19th century furniture, sculpture, works of art, fine art, and carpets. With fabrics generously provided by Le Manach enriching the exhibition, interested collectors can register to bid online on Christie’s.
