Sacred Splendor: Judaica from the Arthur and Gitel Marx Collection

ISIDOR KAUFMANN | THE SON OF THE MIRACLE-WORKING RABBI OF BELZ

The upcoming Sacred Splendor auction, offered by Sotheby’s, is a collection of Jewish books and manuscripts, paintings, and metalwork from the Arthur and Gitel Marx Collection. An early English translation of the Siddur, a daily prayer book according to the Sephardic rite, will be featured. This version of the Siddur was never printed but was rather copied by a professional scribe. The English translation was circulated extensively due to the Jewish community’s early regulation of printing licenses for translated works.

Also up for auction are several paintings, including The Son of the Miracle-Working Rabbi of Belz by Isador Kaufmann. The artist was an Austro-Hungarian painter who traveled through Eastern Europe painting scenes and portraits of Jewish and Hasidic life. The Rabbi referenced in the title of the painting is Rabbi Shalom Rokeaḥ, who founded the Belz Hasidic Dynasty in the early 1800s. One example of the many silver works in the sale is a decorated cup with engraved roundels. The base is marked “Darmstadt” in Hebrew. There were originally four of these cups, three of which were purchased for the Frankfurt Museum before World War II. View any of these lots and register to bid at Sotheby’s

Home and Interiors Day 2, 112319

DOULTON LAMBETH MARQUETERY NEOCLASSICAL VASE

Lenci factory figurines are among Italy’s signature creations. These ceramic figures, particularly those in the Art Deco style, were based on the fashion tastes of Italian designers. Day two of the Home and Interiors auction presented by Whitley’s Auctioneers features a Lenci Art Deco figure of Ave Maria by Helen Konig Scavini. Also presented are examples of Royal Doulton pottery. The Royal Doulton neoclassical vase by Frederick Sutton is a key lot.

This auction will also include diamond-studded necklaces, earrings, and bracelets, along with loose pearls and precious stones. A Trabert & Hoeffer-Mauboussin 14 karat gold and sapphire brooch is one notable piece. The brooch is shaped like a gold scrolled and ribbon-bound bouquet and is decorated with pink tourmaline hearts. Collectors can also explore various Native American items of sterling silver, sculpture, prints, art books, and furniture. Explore the full listings and register to bid online on Bidsquare.

Couture and Vintage Wine Auction

Gucci Maroon Shoulder Bag

During the first session of the upcoming Couture And Vintage Wine auction by Kaminski Auctions, a variety of handbags, accessories, jewelry, and shoes will be available. An ostrich leather satchel from a Californian collector, a monogrammed hardside suitcase, an Italian luxury lambskin coat, and an empire waist midi dress will all be included. Silk scarves with nautical, automobile, and floral patterns will also be available. This sale will especially highlight couture clothing and accessories from brands such as Louis Vuitton, Hermés, and Armani.

The auction will showcase a single-owner collection of wines from a Massachusetts estate during its second session. While many of this session’s lots are available in groups of assorted wines, a single 1959 bottle of Château Mouton Rothschild is of particular interest. This bottle, like every bottle since 1924, was packaged right on the French château where the grapes were grown and fermented. Masterworks of American Craft

Dale Chihuly, Scarlet Lake Swirled Venetian with Flowers

Robert Arneson’s ceramic pieces often combined social commentary and absurdity: a household plate with a pool installed and a scale weighing only five human toes are two examples. But one of his ceramics available in the upcoming Masterworks of American Craft auction, offered by Rago, provides a different perspective. His Big Head of Jackson is a tribute to the late painter Jackson Pollock. Key details include Pollock’s distinct cleft chin and laugh lines. Beyond Arneson’s work, the auction includes 42 other lots of 20th-century fine and decorative art.

In Viola Frey’s Grandmother with Red Hat sculpture, the colors of the grandmother’s clothes spill onto her face and arms. Yellow covers both the left side of her face and left arm. Meanwhile, red traces are visible on her jawline and both her right thumb and index finger. This piece comes to auction from the Morgan Gallery in Kansas City, Missouri. It also appeared in the 1983 exhibition “Viola Frey: Paintings, Sculptures, Drawings” in San Francisco.

Blurring colors is also a key aspect of Dale Chihuly’s Scarlet Lake Swirled Venetian with Flowers, another featured lot in this sale. The hand-blown glass piece comes to auction directly from the artist’s estate. According to his personal website, Chihuly’s glass technique is different from traditional approaches, “…utilizing gravity and centrifugal force to let molten glass find its shape in its own organic way.” Also available in this auction is a lobster and crab box made of gilt metal and designed by Tiffany Studios. It was produced in 1905, twenty years after the studio’s founding. Those interested in this or any other piece can register to bid on Bidsquare.

Many antique rugs from countries such as Persia, France, Turkey, India, and China are featured in the upcoming Oriental Rugs from American Estates auction offered by Material Culture. Several Navajo rugs and tapestries will be available as well. From West African flatweave to early 20th century Chinese Art Deco, these rugs have been handed down from generation to generation.

Featured in this auction is a 12-foot by 23-foot antique Sultanabad Persian rug. Made in Iran, this rug is decorated with a floral pattern. A Mudjur prayer rug from Turkey shows a red building with a background of blue, red, and tan. Also included in the auction is a French Savonnerie rug. This light-colored piece has a yellow flower in the center surrounded by a lavender floral pattern. Other items include Flemish tapestries and Kashmir shawls. Fine Musical Instruments

Fender Stratocaster Electric Guitar, 1964

The musette de cour is a type of bagpipe that was popular with the French aristocracy in the 17th and 18th centuries. But as the aristocracy was usurped during the French Revolution, so too was the prevalence of this bagpipe. An 18th-century musette de cour is available in the upcoming Fine Musical Instruments auction, presented by Skinner. This auction is also set to include guitars, saxophones, and violins.

Available in this sale is an 18th-century violin by Joseph Gagliano, the son of noted violin-maker Nicolo Gagliano. “His early instruments showed him to be very skilled,” says Rare Violins of New York on the younger Gagliano’s abilities, “and his work was at times comparable to his father’s.” This particular violin was produced in 1761 and comes with a case and two bows. Among the many guitars available in this auction is a Fender Stratocaster electric guitar from 1960. Several modifications were made to it, including changes on its neck. Fine & Decorative Art Auction

Eanger Irving Couse "Untitled (The Pottery

The Fine & Decorative Art Auction offered by Dallas Auction Gallery puts forth a diverse collection of fine arts, decorative arts, jewelry, collectibles, and other categories. The oil on canvas piece “Custer’s Last Rally” by John Mulvany is the highest estimated item of the collection. As mentioned in the description by the auction house, after viewing the painting, Walt Whitman said, “I only saw it for an hour or so, but it needs to be seen many times, needs to be studied over and over again.”

A key piece is a bronze sculpture molded in 1905 by Frederic Remington. The sculpture is named “The Rattlesnake” as it depicts a horse fearing a rattlesnake while the rider is trying to hold onto the horse’s mane and his hat. The piece is regarded as the best of Remington’s sculpturally fluid work. Paintings from popular artists such as Eanger Irving Couse, William Acheff, and Fremont Ellis, alongside a painted wood chair by Karel, 14-carat emerald necklace and more will also be available in the auction. Among the featured lots is a vintage Coppola e Toppo Italian necklace. Measuring approximately 18 inches in length and featuring a woven pattern in shades of pink, the necklace was possibly designed for the Italian fashion designer Elsa Schiaparelli. Two matching low tables will be featured from their collection, topped with round marble and Chinese jade flowers in relief.

Several pieces of jewelry will be highlighted in the sale, including a white gold, sapphire, and diamond bracelet. An 18 karat white gold and diamond jewelry suite will also be available.
