The New Year’s Weekend Gallery Auction

Eickholt, Art Glass Vase

In the early 18th century, Spanish master Francisco Goya created Los Caprichos, a satire of his contemporary society. Goya’s body of work was withdrawn from public sale and published as an album in 1799. Almost two centuries later, in the mid-1970s, Surrealist painter Salvador Dalí offered his interpretation of Goya’s work in the Los Caprichos de Goya by Dalí series. One hand-colored etching from the collection is highlighted in the New Year’s Weekend Gallery Auction presented by Leland Little Auctions.

The sale emphasizes antique furniture, both Continental and American, as well as fine art and prints. A 19th century yellow pine stepback cabinet is a key lot. The cabinet has a two-part form with a step-cut pediment on a flush molded base. Other notable furniture includes a late 20th century Chippendale-style porter’s chair and a Scottish George III linen press. Several pieces of fine art are also available. These include a hand-colored engraving by Johan Frederik Clemens, an oil painting titled Amaryllis by Bernique Longley, and a 1975 lithograph by Norman Rockwell. The Las Vegas Motorcycle Auction

1910 Harley-Davidson 30ci Model 6A Single

In 1901, at the age of 21, William S. Harley designed an engine well suited for a bicycle. After a few years, Harley and his childhood friend Arthur Davidson began expanding the design to build the first motorcycle. This was their very first attempt towards the production of the modern motorbike. In 1907, Harley-Davidson Motor Company was incorporated. Today, the company is one of the most popular and largest American manufacturers of custom, touring, and cruiser motorcycles. A 1910 Harley Davidson Single is a highlight of the upcoming Las Vegas Motorcycle Auction offered by Bonhams.

The auction will also include a prototype of the popular Indian Big Base Racer. This bike is claimed to be one of 13 pre-production models produced in 1941. Another motorcycle featured in the sale is a 940 Crocker Big Tank V-Twin produced by Albert Crocker, the founder of Crocker Motorcycles. According to Bonhams, “It’s been almost 80 years since Al Crocker’s last V-twin roadster left the factory on Venice Blvd. in East Los Angeles.” To view more items and register to bid online, visit Bonhams.

Watches, Jewelry, Fine Art, Antiques And Midcentury Modern

Breguet 18kt Le Reveil du Tsar, 5707

In 1976, Patek Philippe, one of the most esteemed luxury wristwatch brands, introduced the Nautilus to the market. The shape of the watch was unprecedented, using an octagon bezel and curved edges. The name, Nautilus, comes from the submarine described in Jules Verne’s Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. An 18 karat gold Nautilus watch will be available in the upcoming Watches, Jewelry, Fine Art, Antiques, and Midcentury Modern auction, presented by Clarke Auction Gallery.

Another leading lot in the auction is a watercolor painting by Thomas Waterman Wood. In the composition of his paintings, Wood emphasized the details and spirits of his subjects. He often captured events in the life of his hometown of Montpelier, Vermont. Along with Wood’s watercolor is a pair of oil paintings by Chuck Sabatino. In applying layers of paint in very thin oil glazes, Sabatino draws attention to the light and shadow in his paintings. Warm colors such as amber, gold, and brown are fitting for his subjects and backgrounds. He is loyal to those tones: “All the west is those colors. It’s the warmth of this part of the country, and I’m trying to bring that out.” View all of these lots and register to bid at Bidsquare.

It will include furniture, decorative and fine arts, Kentucky long rifles, powder horns, and accessories.

The bisque lidded teapot by Ferguson is glazed with dark colors and rabbit motifs.

Home and Interiors Auction, Day 1 011820

4 ROYAL DOULTON KATE GREENAWAY COLLECTION FIGURES, BASE

The popularity of Royal Doulton figurines has sustained the stoneware company, a change from its start as a manufacturer of drain and water pipes. With various innovations and experiments with different mediums, Doulton’s artistic pottery was most popular after 1913, particularly for its HN series of Pretty Lady figurines.  The upcoming auction presented by Whitley’s Auctioneers offers a collection of this Doulton Lambeth and Burslem pottery. From the NH series is a figurine of a baby Cupid riding a crocodile. The allegorical figurine is among the only two examples produced by Doulton designer Charles Noke.

Other porcelain figurines available in this sale were made by Boehm pottery. A Bengal tiger figurine created by self-taught sculptor Edward Marshall Boehm is a highlight. The inspiration for his animal figurines was derived from Boehm’s early occupation as a cattle breeder, where he learned about animal anatomy and forms. He would go on to integrate that knowledge into his sculptures. The auction also includes Royal Worcester porcelain articles and Connoisseur sculptures.
