Russian artist Konstantin Makovsky (1839–1915) is best known for his oil painting titled A Boyar Wedding Feast, which won a gold medal in the 1885 World’s Fair in Antwerp, Belgium. Like most of his work, this painting celebrated traditional Russian customs and rituals. It depicts a bride and groom poised to kiss each other at a 17th century wedding feast. Highlighted in the upcoming Estate Jewelry Russian Bronze New Year Sale, offered by Allure Antique Auction Company, is a Russian enamel box with a hand-painted miniature of A Boyar Wedding Feast on the top. Designed by Ivan Khlebnikov, a Russian goldsmith and merchant of the 19th century, the box is adorned with intricate floral patterns. With two hinged handles, the box also features emerald and ruby jewels and a gold wash interior.
The auction will include designer jewelry by Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Tiffany & Co., Bulgari, Louis Vuitton, David Webb, and Chanel.
