14th C. Chinese Ming Stone Monkey Eating Peach

14th C. Chinese Ming Stone Monkey Eating Peach

14th C. Chinese Ming Stone Monkey Eating Peach:

East Asia, China, Ming dynasty, ca. 1368 to 1644 CE. A large stone baluster or pillar, known in Chinese as “wangzhu,” featuring a monkey and two offspring eating fruit. The simian creature is crouched on a plinth while hunched forward as she brings the fruit to her mouth, and upon her back are two babies clinging to her shoulders. The fruit has traces of a yellow pigment, and may be a peach, which is a Buddhist symbol. Monkeys are also an auspicious animal and appear as Buddhist symbols of longevity. The monkey king Sun Wukong was made the Guardian of the Heavenly Peach Garden, which had three types of mythical peaches that could grant immortality and other powers. Sun Wukong ate the peaches and gained this immortal power and other abilities, which upset some other mythical beings. These monkeys are also immortalized in this lovely stone monument! Size: 7″ L x 8″ W x 20″ H (17.8 cm x 20.3 cm x 50.8 cm)

Ming Dynasty architects continued the Chinese tradition of having important buildings – towers, pavilions, palaces, meeting halls, etc. – built atop terraces, requiring a walk up a grand stone staircase to reach them. These are bordered by balustrades punctuated by balusters. Most famously, the group of buildings known as San Da Dian (The Three Great Halls) at the Forbidden City in Beijing, feature 1460 balusters. Viewed from a distance, these balusters resemble a stone forest.

Maya Pottery Incised Cylinder Vessel w/ Fish

Maya Pottery Incised Cylinder Vessel w/ Fish

Maya Pottery Incised Cylinder Vessel w/ Fish:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico and northern Central America, Maya Territories, Late Classic, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A gorgeous pottery vessel presenting a column-like body, inward-curving walls, and a circular rim, all sitting upon a flat base. The body of the vessel is adorned with 5 fish in low relief with incised detail, all shown in profile to vertically line the dish as they face upward. A horizontal band of relief images representing Maya glyphs decorates the area just below its flared rim. Size: 5.25″ in diameter x 8.375″ H (13.3 cm x 21.3 cm)

Scholars posit that the Maya offered cylinder vessels as diplomatic gifts, and many were used to serve and drink the traditional cacao (chocolate) beverage. In Maya art, tall cylinders like this one are presented in scenes depicting the preparation of the cocoa drink that was extremely popular with the Maya. Large cylindrical vessels like this were placed on the ground, and the drink was poured from smaller vessels above to create a frothy mixture.

These ancient glyphs may convey an important date, a secret message, or simply be part of the vessel’s aesthetic program. According to Dorie Reents-Budet, “One of the remarkable characteristics of Classic Maya painted pottery is the use of writing as more than simply a way to communicate ideas. As in the Islamic tradition, Maya artists employed calligraphy as a prime design feature and as an integral part of the total composition… The hieroglyphic texts also were used as compositional devices, placed specifically to help define the internal tensions, balances and divisions within the pictorial field.” (Dorie Reents-Budet, “Painting the Maya Universe: Royal Ceramics of the Classic Period”, Durham, N.C.: Duke University Press, 1994, page 12)

Roman Gold Repousse Applique w/ Portrait of Nero

Roman Gold Repousse Applique w/ Portrait of Nero

Roman Gold Repousse Applique w/ Portrait of Nero:

Rome, Imperial, ca. 1st century CE. An exemplary repousse applique of discoid form and stunningly well-preserved detail, made from gold of over 23 karats and displaying a portrait of the Roman Emperor Nero (r. 54 to 68 CE) in profile facing right. The notorious ancient ruler is surrounded by a swirling braid-like motif. A set of 4 equidistantly space perforations lay on the periphery so that this could be sewn onto a piece of clothing. Though a damnatio memoriae or condemnation of memory was implemented on Nero after his death causing him to be excluded from official accounts and his portraits to be altered or destroyed, this remarkable example was most likely buried with a nobleman who wore the applique as a demonstration of his allegiance with the emperor and had died while Nero was still in power. Size: 2.2″ in diameter (5.6 cm); Metal quality: 97.34% gold (equivalent to over 23 karats); Weight: 2.9 grams

Nero was the final Roman emperor of the Julio-Claudian line. He became emperor in 54 CE, at the age of sixteen, making him the youngest sole emperor until Elagabalus, who became emperor at 14 in 218 CE. Nero’s rule is usually associated with tyranny and extravagance – rumored to have played a lyre while Rome was burning in the Great Fire; however, some sources point to his popularity among the commoners living in the eastern provinces of the Empire – and despite his tyrannical reputation, perhaps we can appreciate the fact that Nero was an art lover who is said to have performed music and recited poetry to the senate as well as the populace.
