Something For Everyone

Zuni Turquoise & Sterling Silver Cuff Bracelet

The upcoming Something For Everyone auction, offered by Joshua Kodner, highlights a tourmaline pendant and chain from Tiffany & Co. In 1876, gemologist Dr. George Frederick Kunz walked in the Tiffany & Co. office in New York City with a tourmaline stone that he had obtained from the Mount Mica Mine in Maine. He persuaded Charles Tiffany to buy the gemstone, beginning Kunz’s life-long relationship with the brand as a resident gem expert.

Beyond Jewelry, the sale also offers fine art, sculpture, pottery, and more. The auction features work by Edouard Léon Cortès and other noteworthy artists. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Paris was considered the center of the art world. Cortès worked to capture the spirit of the city in his paintings, earning himself the nickname the “Parisian Poet of Painting.” The available Cortès piece shows a street scene with the Arc de Triomphe in the background.

Also presented in the sale is a work by Victor Vasarely of the Op Art movement. Vasarely was especially known for pioneering the use of optical illusions on a flat surface. A piece from his hexagonal Gestalt series will be up for bid. The available lot uses colorful three-dimensional shapes to create an interlocking optical illusion. After the success of his 1960s Campbell’s Soup series, Andy Warhol began creating screenprints of celebrities to honor stars after their deaths. Among the subjects captured by the Pop artist is a portrait of American movie star and Princess of Monaco, Grace Kelly. Completed in 1984, two years after her death, the portrait is based on a still from Kelly’s cinematic debut in Fourteen Hours. This piece was completed for a fundraiser benefiting the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia, where Kelly was born. This Warhol piece will be offered in the upcoming Prints & Multiples Online auction, presented by Sotheby’s.

Roy Lichtenstein’s 1965 screenprint titled Reverie is also among the featured lots. Executed in yellow, red, blue and black, the picture was made using Benday dots and stripes. Also available is a piece from Turner Prize winner Grayson Perry, titled The Island of Bad Art. Traditional/Individual Modern Native American Art

A Pauta Saila sculpture

Traditional Native American fetishes were used as spiritual talismans of protection and religious symbolism. Present in many Indigenous cultures, modern fetishes often serve artistic and decorative purposes in addition to their spiritual qualities. Denise Wallace, an artisan from Alaska’s Chugach tribe, designed a fetish necklace in 1992 to explore her Inuit heritage. Speaking of her inspiration, she stated, “Some of the carvings are full-body figures, whereas others are simply a stump of a body with no arms. These older fetish pieces might be used as part of a doll or to bring blessings.” Wallace’s sterling silver, ivory, and 14-karat gold necklace will be highlighted in the upcoming Modern Native American Art auction, offered by Bonhams

The sale will include art and sculpture from across the North American continent, including many contemporary pieces. John Nieto’s work is featured with Sioux Warrior, a 1987 acrylic painting. Nieto was a New Mexican artist who frequently depicted Native American culture in the Southwest. The available piece shows a colorful warrior with a single feather crowning his head. Other lots of interest include a gold cuff bracelet from Charles Loloma and two Pauta Saila dancing bear sculptures. The sale of several of this auction’s lots, including the bear sculptures, will benefit the Inuit Art Foundation (IAF) in Toronto, Ontario.
