Cartier Van Cleef Designer Jewelry Auction

One of the key lots available in the upcoming Cartier Van Cleef Designer Jewelry auction, presented by Allure Antique Auction Company, is a yellow, cushion-cut diamond. This individual gem is GIA-certified and has a total carat weight of 55.85. The auction also features a vintage Alhambra long necklace designed with 18-karat yellow gold, onyx, and round diamonds. Alhambra necklaces were first created by Van Cleef & Arpels in 1968 and have remained popular since. The available lot includes over 180 diamonds. Another highlight of the sale is a watercolor painting by Salvador Dalí. Created in the Neoclassical style, the painting is based on the Head of Giuliano de’ Medici. The watercolor includes a certificate of authenticity. 

Known for capturing the urban streets and neighborhoods of New York City, American painter and etcher John Sloan was one of the founders of the Ashcan school of American art. One of Sloan’s oil paintings, featured in the auction, is mounted on board and depicts a street scene filled with cars and buildings. Robert Kipniss (American, b.1931) 'Three Trees' Oil on Canvas

As a tribute to the British Royal Air Force and its pilots, Rolex released the Air-King wristwatch in 1945. The watch has a 34mm case, one of the largest of the time, earning it the name ‘King.’ Today, the Air-King is one of Rolex’s oldest watch models still in production. The upcoming Online Only March Auction, presented by Leonard Auction, will offer an Air-King 5501, a two-tone watch with a gold fluted bezel. 

New York-born artist Robert Kipniss is known for his colorless and shadowy paintings of trees, cottage-style interiors, and countrysides. The sale features an oil painting by Kipniss, titled The Trees. Also highlighted is a Towle sterling silver flatware set in the King Richard pattern. Named after Richard the Lion-Heart, this pattern was introduced in 1932 and was inspired by the architecture of old English mansions. Ernest Trova was a sculptor and Pop artist who rose to fame during the 1960s for his series of sculptures, prints, and paintings titled Falling Man. A self-taught artist, Trova worked as a window dresser in his early years. Inspired by the works of artists such as Jean Dubuffet and Francis Bacon, he was equally fascinated by the mannequins at the department store where he worked. His series “… about man at his most imperfect” depicts human figures without arms. The upcoming auction, presented by Akiba Antiques, presents a selection of Trova’s figurines. Featured among the lots is a stainless steel sculpture titled Table Man. The Stainless Study Man and the Stainless Flowing Man are other notable works from the series.

An available Optical art painting titled E-148 by Tadasuke Kuwayama depicts concentric circles painted in shades of blue and red. Japanese Popy Combattler V Tin Key Wind Robot Toy

The upcoming Spring Comic Book & Toy Auction, offered by Bruneau & Co. Auctioneers, will particularly feature Marvel comic books. Highlighted is issue 39 of Marvel Comics Tales of Suspense from March 1963, which is overall in good condition. Notably, this issue contains the first appearance of Iron Man. There are several issues of the Tales of Suspense series in the auction, as well as early or rare editions of Spider-Man, Teen Titans, Thor, X-Men, Iron Fist, and more. Other comic-related lots include original art pages, such as a single panel from Dr. Strange in Shamballa by Dan Green. This color artwork was purchased directly from the artist and is appearing for the first time at auction.

James Edward Buttersworth was best known for capturing marine settings in his paintings. Often considered one of the best American maritime artists, Buttersworth’s work is highlighted in Skinner’s upcoming American Furniture and Decorative Arts auction. Titled Packet Ship Kennebec in New York Harbor, the available piece depicts the Kennebec and several other ships caught in a storm. The Kennebec was the largest ship built by the William Rogers shipbuilding firm.

The auction also features items from John James Audubon, Leander Allen Plummer, George Loring Brown, and others. One of the pieces from Audubon studies an American White Pelican. The auction house notes that the engraving, printing, and hand-coloring of this lot were done by Robert Havell around 1836. William C. Morris

Dale Chihuly is best known for his organic glass sculptures, which have been displayed around the world. Describing the whimsical nature of his work, the artist said, “I want people to be overwhelmed with light and color in some way that they’ve never experienced.” Available in the upcoming Bonhams auction is a Chihuly chandelier made of blown glass in shades of yellow and gold. This sculpture includes interior lighting, allowing multiple neon colors to light the piece. 

Exploring mediums such as graffiti, photography, and painting, contemporary artist Retna fuses visual linguistics and urban poetics in his work. Three untitled Retna pieces are available in this sale. Also included is a sculpture titled Mao Never Down. French Giltwood Over-Mantle Mirror

Louis Comfort Tiffany created Tiffany Studios particularly to expand the use of iridescent glass in lamps and windows. It was during this time that Edison’s invention of the incandescent light bulb inspired Tiffany to focus on home interiors. The upcoming auction, offered by Cottone Auctions, presents several examples of Tiffany’s Art Nouveau works, including floor lamps, table lamps, and ceiling fixtures. Particularly featured is a 1914 rose table lamp by Tiffany Studios. The leaded glass and patinated bronze shades are also called “rose helmets.” A green and red-colored dragonfly table lamp and an 18-light, favrile lily lamp will be featured as well.

Landscape artist Carl William Peters often drew sketches on blackboards to entertain his friends; he later moved to Fairport to learn painting. His works often depict severe weather scenes of Rochester and Fairport. Highlighted is a snow scene painting by Peters, titled Elm Street, Rochester, NY. Also offered are furniture antiques, including a chair from Finn Juhl, as well as Oriental rugs, Aubusson carpets, Fabergé sculptures, Chinese decorative arts, and silverware. His paintings, which mostly favored the Neoclassical style, often captured 19th-century social status. The available piece depicts a woman in a lace dress, resting her elbow on a pile of cloth. Another lot of interest is a gilt silver plate from Mexico. The piece is carved with scrolls, acanthuses, flowers, and geometric motifs on the front. 

This auction will also feature a ship sculpture that dates back to the 16th century. The piece is decorated with railings, lily flowers, and plant designs. The Provencal cross on the item indicates it was owned by the Order of Santo Domingo. Pieces of 18th– and 19th-century fine art, as well as ethnographic and furniture pieces, will also be offered. The upcoming Fine Jewelry and Timepieces auction, presented by SAJ Auction, features a necklace, watch, and ring from Bulgari’s Parentesi collection.

A clematis flower brooch by Van Cleef & Arpels is among the highlighted items. The flower’s petals are made of white coral, with eight diamonds forming the brooch’s center. A TAG Heuer Microtimer watch is also available in the sale. Launched in 2003, the Microtimer is the first Swiss-made electronic movement, with precision to 1/1000th of a second. This professional sports chronograph watch was designed for Formula One racing. The multi-functional timepiece has a black LCD background, as well as information about the lap time, fastest lap, number of laps, and the total race time. Artist Javier Pulido Sherwin Williams is also highlighted in the sale. His available still-life oil painting invokes the 1614 work by Frans Snyders, which was titled Still Life with Dead Game, Fruits, and Vegetables in a Market.
