Mar 19, 2024 10:00 EDTThe upcoming auction, offered by Christie’s, presents a wide range of Korean and Japanese artworks, including lacquer works, sculptures, and ceramics. Katsushika Hokusai’s complete set of Fugaku Sanjurokkei (Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji) headlines the sale. Hokusai was one of the prominent Japanese ukiyo-e artists of the Edo period. He created his iconic woodblock print series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji from 1830 to 1832. This complete set of forty-six prints includes The Great Wave Off Kanagawa and Kajikazawa in Kai Province. The series showcases Mount Fuji from various locations and in different seasons.
Another notable artist represented in the catalog is Lee Ufan with his 1985 untitled artwork. Born in South Korea, Lee studied painting along with calligraphy and poetry at the College of Kyongnam and the University of Seoul. He is best known for his paintings characterized by single brushstrokes and minimalist sculptures. The available lot demonstrates an array of techniques that Lee mastered during his early career days. Collectors can also consider a Buncheong slip-decorated stoneware bottle from the Joseon dynasty (15th-16th century), a 13th-century mother-of-pearl inlaid lacquer bell stand, and Morita Shiryu’s Dragon.
