Ancient / Ethnographic Art Through The Ages

20th C. Indian Marble Carving of Durga & Lion Mount

The upcoming Ancient/ Ethnographic Art Through the Ages auction, presented by Artemis Gallery, features an Egyptian shabti. The funerary figurine was intended for Khaemwaset, the revered fourth son of Ramesses II. He was the first Egyptologist to document Egypt’s Old Kingdom monuments, which were over 1,000 years old during his lifetime. Khaemwaset restored many of these early monuments, and some bear his inscriptions. The available turquoise-hued mummiform prince figurine stands erect with his arms crossed.

The auction also offers over 40 lots of decorative art. Highlighted among them is a copper-silver alloy plaquette. It features a mounted warrior on horseback at the center flanked by four goddesses who hold cornucopias at either end. According to scholars, the riding warrior was a deity of ancient Thrace. He was referred to as the Thracian Horseman, Thracian Rider, or Thracian Hero and was a symbol of victory and strength. An early Egyptian yellow breccia bowl is also notable. The use of breccia was sporadic in ancient Egypt, and only a few pieces were commissioned by the wealthy. View these items and register to bid online on Bidsquare.

Deportes Unidos por México (Sports United by Mexico)

Club Pericos de Puebla. Pelota firmada por el primer roster. Con certificado.

Lucha libre or “free fight” gained popularity in Mexico as a diversion from political turmoil in the early 20th century. Over time, masks became closely associated with these fights and allowed famous luchadores such as El Santo to retain anonymity for much of their careers. Coming to auction as part of the Sports United by Mexico auction, presented by Morton Subastas, is a lucha libre mask and equipment. The skeleton mask is draped with a yellow, red, and black hood. Before crossing the auction block, it was used by a luchador in the Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide promotion company.

Bidders will also find lots from other sports, including baseball, Formula 1 racing, and basketball. Collectors of baseball memorabilia can consider a baseball signed by the Los Angeles Angels center fielder Mike Trout. He signed the ball in Monterrey, Mexico, while playing in the 2019 MLB Mexico Series. The Angels were outscored 24 to 6 in the two-game series against their opponent, the Houston Astros. Basketball fans will find a Chicago Bulls jersey signed by players on the team during the 2018 Mexico City Games. Those interested in this or any other lot can register to bid on Bidsquare.

ReDesigned

Parrot On A Branch

Entirely self-taught, Francis Bacon emerged in 1945 as a significant force in British painting. Bacon’s oeuvre was dominated by emotionally charged depictions of the human body. In the 1970s, Bacon painted a series of triptychs in response to the tragic death of his lover in 1971. Metropolitan Triptych was the last work the artist made before his major retrospective at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1975. A lithograph of the central panel of this work will be highlighted in the upcoming ReDesigned auction, presented by John Moran Auctioneers.

This sale of over 150 lots will include categories such as decorative art, furniture, and ceramics. A lithograph from Czech artist Alphonse Mucha is among the lots of interest. Rendered in pale pastels and the Art Nouveau style, much of Mucha’s work depicts beautiful young women in flowing garments amidst flowers. The Art Nouveau style can be seen in his work Eveil du Matin, available in this event. An abstract painting from Marcel Janco and a Classical sculpture from Nguyen Tuan will be offered as well.
