In the upcoming Seattle Sage Coin Auction from Gold Standard Auctions, 450 lots of coins, currency, and foreign coinage will cross the auction block. Among the top lots in the catalog is a Walking Liberty half-dollar from 1945. The 50-cent coin commemorates the Allies’ victory over Germany and Japan at the end of World War II. Designed by sculptor and engraver Adolph A. Weinman and issued by the United States Mint between 1916 and 1947, the available piece is considered one of the best designs in US coinage history. The obverse of the coin depicts the image of Lady Liberty as she walks holding branches under the rising sun, carrying the American flag. The reverse shows a bald eagle soaring from a mountaintop. Another lot of interest in this sale is a $5 gold half-eagle from 1824. The 1824 $5 Gold Half Eagle was one of a series of coins struck from 1813 to 1829 that featured a capped bust design. The obverse features Liberty wearing a bonnet and looking left. The edge of the card has 13 stars and a date beneath. The reverse shows a spread-winged eagle and the words “E Pluribus Unum” on a ribbon over its head.

Simple and pure in its form, the drawing exhibits a playful vitality. It is triple-signed, and the verso is inscribed with ‘Palma de Mallorca 1941’ in graphite. Also available is a serilithograph on paper by French artist Jean-Claude Picot, titled Le Vase Blue de Madrid. A vase of flowers, fruit, and a checkerboard in a brightly colored room are portrayed in this still-life painting. Jean-Claude Picot drew ordinary objects and scenes with his joyful sense of humor using strong colors. The work is signed at the bottom right of the plate.

A piece of Cubist art attributed to Pablo Picasso, titled Visage d’une Femme, will be offered as well. Among the top lots is a lithograph by Spanish Surrealist artist Salvador Dalí, titled David’s Mourning at the Death of Saul. Starting in the 1950s, Dalí’s paintings were dominated by supernatural themes revealing his fascination with spirituality. The available work was published between 1967 and 1969 by Rizzoli-Mediolani in the Bible vulgatæ. In this piece, Dalí depicts David grieving over King Saul’s death. Despite its faint expression, David’s face reflects his sorrow and pain over losing the king. Toward the top right corner, a guardian angel stands close to David. It is dated and signed on the right margin of the plate.

Another notable fine artwork in the catalog is a 1969 color screenprint on Rives woven paper by American Pop artist Roy Lichtenstein. This piece from Roy Lichtenstein’s The Solomon R. Leading this auction is an original oil on canvas painting of Willie Mays by Ernie Barnes. This Ernie Barnes piece portrays Willie Mays watching a home run sail into the night sky while wearing his San Francisco Giants Road uniform.
