1789 Sons of Liberty GW Inaugural Patriot Button:

1 Large 18th century GW Inaugural copper engraved button.
The button in this image is from the collection of Harry Case of Missouri and his late wife Shirley Case. Harry has always been considered to own the best copper “colonial” button collection in the world. This example is not only the rarest button he had it is only one of about 6 known examples to ever surface onto the market. An expert in the field on these political buttons informs us that he believes these were custom made by a jeweler at the time and that there was only one set created. The J.Harold Cobb collection of political buttons was sold at auction in 2003 by Stack’s of New York and one of the 6 buttons possible known (only 2 known at that time) was sold in that auction for $17000.00, plus the buyer premium at that time. Harold Cobb was considered a world renown experts and holder of some of the rarest GW examples known along with probably the largest collection of them as well. The button is pictured in the book “George Washington Inaugural Buttons and Medalets, 1789-1793″, by J.Harold Cobb. Cobb was a pier of Dewey Albert’s who is also considered a renown expert on the subject and who was known in the National Button Society for his expertise. Attached to the image of this listing are pages from the auction in 2003 and also the link is provided for you here as well. This extremely rare button is in our opinion is the rarest button Lion and Unicorn Auctions has ever sold and if you want a rare example of American History and a rare button for your collection, this is the one to go for. The beautiful engraving or chasing is in pristine condition along with the wonderful copper color hue. When looking at the black and white photo from the book and the realized price list look at #1 (highlighted), that as you will see is the same example as the button we are offering here from Harry’s collection.
