Nazmiyal Auctions Offers Antique Persian, Turkish, Chinese, and Scandinavian Rugs This March

ANTIQUE PERSIAN KERMAN RUG

Nazmiyal Auctions will bring a wide-ranging and carefully curated selection of antique rugs to the market this March. A mainstay of Manhattan, Nazmiyal will present over 150 lots of fine vintage and antique carpets from around the world. Among the top lots is an antique oversized Persian Khorassan rug from the 1920s. This piece measures 28 feet by 14 feet and is emblematic of the soft room-sized carpets produced in the Khorassan region of northeastern Persia (modern-day Iran). Several detailed borders surround the central expanse of twisting flowers and leaves. Shades of royal blue, light brown, and cream give this rug a calming effect. Other notable Persian rugs on offer include a pair of antique Mohtashem Kashan rugs with rich, warm colors, as well as a large Tabriz rug showing a palace scene.

From 20th-century Turkey comes a large antique Oushak rug with a bold medallion. Surrounding the geometric center is an uninterrupted field of light blue that evokes the ripples of a reflecting pool. Other rugs in the sale come from weavers further to the East. An antique Indian Agra rug in burgundy rose, and pale blue is available alongside Qing dynasty rugs from 19th-century China. A large Chinese carpet shows several dragons flying through a midnight blue sky; a border of clouds, flowers, and geometric shapes add interest to the story.

A selection of Scandinavian rugs, particularly from Swedish designer and brand Marta Maas, round out the offerings. Lot #4043 is a vintage Barbro Nilsson rug for Marta Maas. It has contemporary blue and green patterns, and black lines that subtly swirl together. Before placing a bid, interested collectors can make use of the auction house’s new augmented reality feature to view the available carpets in any room. Rare Copy of the Land Ordinance of 1785 and Early American Catholic Bible Come to Auction With Freeman’s

Rare Copy of the Land Ordinance of 1785 and Early American Catholic Bible Come to Auction With Freemans

After the end of the American Revolution, the United States government acquired the Northwest Territory from Great Britain. The Land Ordinance of 1785 specified the standardized mode of measuring, dividing, and distributing this territory. It was a notable precursor to the landmark Northwest Ordinance of 1787 and a cornerstone for the Public Land Survey System. A very rare print of the Land Ordinance of 1785 is a key highlight of the upcoming Freeman’s auction. It details the mechanism for surveying and selling land in the Western Frontier. The complete Land Ordinance of 1784 is also printed on the first page. Another unique manuscript in the catalog is the first American Catholic Douay-Rheims Bible. This version features a 200-year-old record of the Cauffman family of Roxborough, Philadelphia. It comprises ten signatures of the family members, extending from Joseph Cauffman (1796) to Tyler Hart Bradbury (1985).

The sale also offers a portrait of President George Washington in silk. Most likely one of only five known copies, the stipple-engraved image depicts Washington seated and dressed in military uniform. To view the complete catalog and register to bid online, visit Bidsquare.

Xuande Porcelain, Pavel Akimov Ovchinnikov Golden Egg, and Jul Hügler Jewelry at Akiba Antiques

Usually, Xuande porcelain can be recognized by its strong cobalt blue decoration on a creamy white background. But the leading lot in Akiba Antiques’ Lavisher’s Luxuries auction is a Xuande bronze piece with real gold glaze. This antique gold-splashed patinated bronze vase is from the late 18th to early 19th century. The vase has double Qiulong “curling dragon” handles, a tapered neck, and a slightly flared rim. The vase also has the highly recognized six-character Xuande mark. Another available 19th-century treasure comes from the Russian goldsmith and silversmith Pavel Akimov Ovchinnikov. The egg is double-headed silver cloisonné that features a heavily detailed silver foundation decorated with scrolling floral and foliate motifs. Once a slave, Ovchinnikov was set free because of his skills in making jewelry.

A pair of vintage Jul Hügler earrings is also available in the auction. The coral drop earrings are carved and set in 18-karat gold with floral vine designs. It is an early 20th-century pair that comes with its original box. The Austrian jewelry brand belonged to Julius Hügler, who supplied the Habsburg dynasty with jewels and valuables. The brand received international recognition at the legendary Exposition International des Arts Décoratifs et Industriel Modernes in Paris in 1925 when it won the Medal d’Or for its innovative aesthetics. Clarke Auction Gallery Offers Prints and Paintings by G. Kneller, Wedsworth Wadsworth, and Others in Upcoming Online-Only Sale

Wedsworth Wadsworth 1870 Signed & Dated Watercolor

German-born artist Godfrey Kneller studied art under Dutch painters Ferdinand Bol and Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn in Amsterdam until relocating to London with his brother. Once in England, the established artist met, and painted the portrait of, Charles II. This experience caused Kneller to shift his focus, and he began concentrating almost exclusively on portraits. Kneller became the favored painter for the late 17th and early 18th-century English and British monarchs and their courts.  His other well-recognized works include portraits of Isaac Newton at different stages in life, portraits of numerous members belonging to London’s Kit-Cat Club, and a portrait of Michael Alphonsius Shen Fu-Tsung. In the upcoming Online-Only Auction with No Reserve, Clarke Auction Gallery will present three antique G. Kneller prints as one lot. These prints contain the portraits of William Duke of Gloucester, Queen Anne, and Robert Earl of Offord, respectively. On each print, the subject’s name is displayed over their profile.

Also available in the auction is an 1870 scenic watercolor by American Impressionist painter Wedsworth Wadsworth. The landscape painting, having been signed and dated by the renowned artist, calls attention to a winding, flowing river that separates a tree-lined cliff from the hills seen in the distance. Baseball Signed by Satchel Paige Will Cross Blackwell Auctions’ Block

Baseball Signed by Satchel Paige Will Cross Blackwell Auctions Block

In the 1920s, Satchel Paige started his career in the Negro Leagues. However, it was only after rules discriminating against Black American players were abolished that he was allowed to enter the major leagues. Shortly after, Paige became regarded as one of the greatest players in the history of baseball, with over 2,000 wins during his 30-year career. A baseball signed by Satchel Paige along with ten other members of the Miami Marlins team will cross the auction block in the upcoming Winter Exceptional Estates Auction, presented by Blackwell Auctions.

Collectors will also find a photograph from Henri Cartier-Bresson. A French photographer, Cartier-Bresson dabbled in painting in his early years. But in 1932, he purchased a Leica camera, which shifted his interests to photography. Cartier-Bresson was primarily known for his documentary style. Many believe his black-and-white images shaped modern street photography. “For me the camera is a sketch book, an instrument of intuition and spontaneity, the master of the instant which, in visual terms, questions and decides simultaneously,” he said, explaining his approach to photography. The available piece from Henri Cartier-Bresson shows a young boy walking down the street with a content expression. View other notable lots and register to bid online on Bidsquare.

Rolex Day-Date Stella Featured in Upcoming Rago Timepieces Auction

Rolex Day-Date Stella

Colored dial Rolex wristwatches, known as Day-Date Stellas, were introduced in the 1970s. These were an extension of the brand’s flagship Day-Date model. A Chatelaine-based company called Stella provided the dyes and veneers for the dials, giving the model its name. The upcoming Rago timepieces auction presents a rare Rolex Day-Date Stella gold wristwatch, reference 1803. The 18-karat yellow gold and green enamel watch features the signature pip-pan form and a president bracelet.

Another highlight is an Élegante 48 Titalyt titanium wristwatch by F.P. Journe. The fluorescent blue and black dial watch is by notable watchmaker François-Paul. Its battery lasts for ten years if worn daily, while its occasional use extends the battery life to 18 years. If the watch does not detect usage for 35 minutes, its hands stop working. However, the movement continues tracking the time in the background. This enticing functioning is due to its electro-mechanical movement, motion sensors, and eight years of extensive research. The present Élegante watch with Côtes de Genève finish features a flat Tortue case, rubber turquoise strap, and a transparent back.

The auction also showcases a Chopard LUC Classic GMT white guilloche dial wristwatch. The watch is notable for its slim construction. It displays two time zones and a perpetual calendar, making it popular among travelers. In addition, this dedicated timepiece auction features examples by Audemars Piguet, Patek Philippe, Omega, Harry Winston, and Jaeger-LeCoultre. Interested collectors can explore the entire catalog and register to bid online on Rago.
